Total Minnesota Giving
Rises To Nearly $5 Billion
February 15, 2007
Total charitable giving by individuals, foundations and corporations in
Minnesota rose to $4.9 billion in 2004, the most recent year for which
comprehensive data is available. According to the most recent
Giving in
Minnesota report from the Minnesota Council on Foundations, the state's
charitable giving increased 9 percent from $4.5 billion in 2003
(inflation-adjusted dollars).
-
Individual Minnesotans gave $3.9 billion in 2004, up from $3.5
billion in 2003, a 12-percent increase (9 percent adjusted for inflation).
-
Minnesota foundations and corporate grantmakers awarded $1.072
billion in grants in 2004, a 12-percent increase (9 percent adjusted for
inflation).
-
In 2004, there were 1,341 active grantmakers – 1,150 private
foundations, 111 corporate foundations and giving programs, and 80 community and
public foundations ― up from 1,296 in 2003.
-
Foundation assets increased from $13.5 billion in 2003 to $14.6
billion in 2004.
"A gradually improving
economy in 2003 and 2004 helped lift foundation and corporate giving," said Bill
King, president of the Minnesota Council on Foundations. "The increase in
grantmaking is attributable to growth in the value of endowed assets, as well as
improved corporate profits, the source of most corporate grants." Community
foundations also reported higher levels of gifts from donors.
As in previous years,
education, human services and public affairs/society benefit ranked as the three
subject areas with the highest shares of grant dollars. Education had a 25
percent share of total grant dollars in 2004, compared to 27 percent in 2003.
Human Services increased share of grant dollars by 1 percent to 22 percent in
2004. Public affairs/society benefit ranked third, with a decline from 22
percent to 17 percent of total grant dollars. Arts, culture and humanities
increased to 15 percent of grant dollars after two years at 13 percent. Health
saw strong improvement from 8 percent of total grant dollars in 2003 to 11
percent in 2004. Giving to the religion, environment/animals and international
subject areas maintained the same shares as 2003.
In 2004, more than half (59
percent) of total grant dollars from Minnesota grantmakers were given to
organizations serving the state, with the Twin Cities Metro Area receiving 34
percent, Greater Minnesota 14 percent and statewide 11 percent.
For a second consecutive
year, grantmakers allotted their highest shares of grant dollars to program
support, followed by general support and capital support.
The Minnesota Council on
Foundations, which works actively to strengthen and expand philanthropy,
compiles the Giving in Minnesota report to provide a comprehensive
analysis of the trends and patterns of giving by organized philanthropy in the
state.
Founded in 1969, the Minnesota Council on Foundations serves the Minnesota
community of grantmakers. The council is a regional membership association
working to improve the vitality and health of communities. Council members
include family and private foundations, community and other public foundations,
and corporate foundations and giving programs.
