Total Charitable Giving Surpasses $5 Billion

Dec. 18, 2007

Total charitable giving by individuals, foundations and corporations in Minnesota rose to $5.1 billion in 2005, according to the latest Giving in Minnesota report from the Minnesota Council on Foundations. The state's charitable giving increased 4.9 percent between 2004 and 2005, which is the most recent year for which comprehensive data is available. Key findings from the report:
  • Individual Minnesotans gave $4.1 billion to charity in 2005, up from $3.8 billion in 2004, a 6.8-percent increase (3.7 percent adjusted for inflation).

  • Minnesota foundations and corporate grantmakers awarded $1.02 billion in charitable grants in 2005, a 1.9-percent decrease from 2004, but still surpassing the $1 billion mark for the second year in a row. The decline was due to unusually high one-time grantmaking by two foundations in 2004, rather than to any overall drops in grantmaking by a wide range of funders in 2005.

  • In 2005, Minnesota was home to 1,378 active grantmakers ― 1,174 private foundations, 119 corporate foundations and giving programs, and 85 community and public foundations ― up from 1,341 in 2004.

  • Foundation assets grew from $14.6 billion in 2004 to $15.7 billion in 2005, a 7.3 percent increase, which could signify increased grantmaking in the next few years.

  • Because of disaster relief funding, the Human Services category received the largest share of the state's 2005 grant dollars at 25 percent.

“Minnesota experienced a stable growth in giving in 2005, building on a positive upward trend over the previous few years,” said Bill King, president of the Minnesota Council on Foundations. “And the report offers several signs that this growth could continue in the next few years.”

As in previous years, human services, education and public affairs/society benefit ranked as the three subject areas receiving the most grant dollars. Grantmaking to human services increased, propelling this category to the largest portion of the state’s 2005 grant dollars with a 25 percent share, compared to 22 percent in 2004. The increase is due in part to grantmaking for disaster relief, since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita occurred in 2005 and the South Asia tsunami struck at the end of 2004.

Giving to education fell 4 percentage points to comprise 21 percent of the state's total grantmaking. Public affairs/society benefit gained 1 percentage point to an 18-percent share in 2005. The share of grant dollars to arts, culture and humanities increased 1 percentage point for the second straight year to 16 percent. The share of grantmaking going to both environment/animals and international affairs increased for the first time since 2001, while the share going to religion dropped to 3 percent after three consecutive years at 5 percent.

In 2005, Minnesota grantmakers gave 58 percent of their grant dollars to organizations serving Minnesota, a 1-percent decrease from the previous year. The share of grant dollars going to Minnesota statewide increased from 11 percent in 2004 to 14 percent in 2005, while giving to Greater Minnesota decreased from 13 percent to 11 percent. One-third of 2005 grant dollars went to the Twin Cities.

The Minnesota Council on Foundations, which works actively to strengthen and expand philanthropy, compiles the Giving in Minnesota report to provide a comprehensive analysis of the trends and patterns of giving by organized philanthropy in the state. Giving in Minnesota, 2007 Edition, is available on the Council’s website at mcf.org/gim, where both the full technical report and a six-page summary report are available.

Founded in 1969, the Minnesota Council on Foundations serves the Minnesota community of grantmakers. The Council is a regional membership association working to improve the vitality and health of communities. Council members include family and private foundations, community and other public foundations, and corporate foundations and giving programs.
