Joan Othieno To Head Research At Minnesota Council On Foundations

The Minnesota Council on Foundations has appointed Joan Othieno as Research Manager. The Council, which works actively to strengthen and expand philanthropy, carries out extensive research on Minnesota grantmakers, giving trends and outlooks for giving.
Othieno is responsible for managing the Council’s research and information services for Minnesota’s grantmaking and philanthropy field. The position includes research on the latest giving statistics and historical trends, current issues in the field and best practices of grantmaking organizations. Othieno also will supervise the Council’s extensive data and information on Minnesota grantmakers and grants.
“Joan is an effective researcher and writer, able to communicate with a wide range of audiences,” says Council president Bill King. “Her experience will be invaluable in helping the Council maintain and expand its nationally recognized research and information services.”
Most recently, Othieno was Site System Assessment Coordinator for the two-year multi-site national Care System Assessment Demonstration Project, which was funded by the federal Office of HIV/AIDS Policy (OHAP) and HIV/AIDS Bureau of Health Resources Service Administration (HAB/HRSA), Hennepin County. From 2001 to 2003, she worked as a research associate for Rainbow Research.
Othieno holds a Ph.D. in education from the University of Minnesota, with a focus on program development, research, training and evaluation. She earned a master’s degree in adult education and community development at the U of M and a B.A. with honors in sociology from Punjab University.
Founded in 1969, the Minnesota Council on Foundations serves the Minnesota community of grantmakers. The Council is a regional membership association working to improve the vitality and health of communities. Council members include family and private foundations, community and other public foundations, and corporate foundations and giving programs.
