Outlook Report Shows Grantmakers Anticipate Healthy Growth in Giving

Giving by Minnesota’s foundations and corporate grantmakers will see healthy growth in 2007, according to a new report from the Minnesota Council on Foundations, an association that works actively to strengthen and expand philanthropy.

A December 2006 survey reveals that more than 89 percent of funders expect either to increase (61 percent) grantmaking in 2007 or to maintain (28 percent) their levels of grantmaking from 2006. Grantmakers predict a solid average increase in giving of 5 to 9 percent based on the median average and weighted average by grantmaker size, both of which were the same.

Just 6 percent of funders surveyed expect declines in their levels of giving in 2007, according to the Council’s 2007 Outlook Report. The percentage of grantmakers expecting decreased giving is smaller than the 14 percent anticipating declines a year ago, and much lower than the 19 percent in 2005 and 28 percent in 2004.

“The outlook for grantmaking is stronger than it has been at any time since the recessionary times following 9/11,” said Bill King, Minnesota Council on Foundations president. “The year portends to be a positive one for philanthropic giving, with strong asset growth supporting strong increases in grants to nonprofits overall.”

Growth in assets, mentioned by more than 50 percent of respondents, is the number-one factor in strengthening the anticipated levels of giving in 2007. Twenty-three percent of respondents, mostly community grantmakers, listed gifts from individual donors as a factor in expected increases in giving. About 15 percent of respondents, mostly corporations, citied improvement in company profits contributing to increased giving in 2007.

The report results reflect the responses of 91 foundations and corporate giving programs (41 private and independent foundations, 27 corporate foundations and giving programs and 23 community/public foundations). Survey respondents represent 68 percent of all private grantmaking in the state and comprise grantmakers of all types and sizes, from small, trustee-managed family foundations to nine of the state’s 10 largest grantmaking organizations. The report provides a snapshot of the direction of growth in giving, as well as factors that grantmakers predict will affect their grantmaking activities during the year.

Founded in 1969, the Minnesota Council on Foundations serves the Minnesota community of grantmakers. The Council is a regional membership association working to improve the vitality and health of communities. Council members include family and private foundations, community and other public foundations, and corporate foundations and giving programs.
