Research and Information

The Council provides information services and research on Minnesota philanthropy for grantmakers, grantseekers and the general public, including:
Communications

MCF produces a number of print and electronic publications for grantmakers, grantseekers and the general public, including:
  • Giving Forum, a quarterly newspaper on Minnesota philanthropy distributed free to over 16,000 readers

  • Program Highlights, a bi-monthly calendar of programs and events distributed to MCF members

  • Bi-weekly e-newsletters for both members and the general public providing up-to-date information about grantmaking, new resources and tools

Government Relations

The Council has played an active role in representing philanthropy in Minnesota and advocating on behalf of philanthropy since its inception in 1969. MCF monitors legislation that is important to the philanthropic community through direct contact with legislators and grassroots organizing. Government relations activities include:
  • Foundations on the Hill, an annual opportunity for grantmakers to meet with their federal lawmakers in Washington, D.C., cosponsored by the national Council on Foundations and the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers

  • Congressional visits with both Federal and State delegations

  • Legislative Statement (PDF), updated annually to guide MCF's government affairs work

Leadership

MCF plays an important leadership role in the philanthropic community on both a state and national level. The Council is an advocate for philanthropy by helping elected and public officials, the media and general public understand how grantmaking works and why it is important. The Council is also a national leader in continuing its work to help grantmakers maintain and improve the effectiveness of their work. MCF's leadership includes:
  • Philanthropy & Public Trust, a comprehensive resource to help private, corporate and community/public foundations understand their legal requirements and obligations

  • Diversity Framework, a groundbreaking guideline that frames the discussion of grantmakers' diversity practices around the four roles they play in a civil society

  • Working Towards Diversity research reports, five-year benchmark reports that describe incremental improvements in applying strategies for inclusiveness among Minnesota grantmakers
