Fall 2006

Giving Trends
Minnesota Grantmaking for Early Childhood Development
Prepared by the Minnesota Council on Foundations, September 2006

Grant Dollars for Early Childhood

An analysis of Minnesota Council on Foundations Giving in Minnesota research data shows grantmaking trends among Minnesota's largest funders (the 100+ grantmakers that award total grants over $1 million each year), which award about 85 percent of the state's total private grant dollars.

Like most major philanthropic research, the Council's grantmaking database employs the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE), developed by the National Center for Charitable Statistics, but the NTEE grant codes do not have a specific category for "early childhood development."

In order to gain some approximation of Minnesota grantmaking for early childhood development, the Council analyzed funding to the Beneficiary category of "Infants/Babies (under age 5)" and to the Subject Area category of "Education-Nursery School/Kindergarten/Day Care" in the database.

The year 2004 is the most recent year for which compiled grantmaking figures are available. Large increases in both Beneficiary and Subject Area categories from 2003 to 2004 reflect, in part, substantially higher giving by The McKnight Foundation year to year.
