We Were There: The Role of Philanthropy in Disasters
Council on Foundations, 16 pages, March 2006
This booklet highlights how philanthropy has helped meet both long-term and immediate needs after national emergencies, and helped spur progress in other societal challenges. The publication tells philanthropy's story after the 1989 San Francisco Earthquake, the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, the September 11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina, and offers commentary from grantmakers and government officials on the role foundations played. The booklet also provides examples of how foundations have invested in "visions for progress" on social issues such as AIDS, hunger, public libraries and the hospice movement.

The Nonprofit Sector's Leadership Deficit
Bridgespan Group, March 2006
The report says that the nonprofit sector will need to hire 640,000 senior managers, or more than 2.4 times the number currently employed, in the next decade. Studying charities with revenue of at least $250,000, the organization cited the growing number of nonprofits and the impending retirement of the Baby Boomer generation as two of the causes.

Panel on Nonprofit Sector Supplemental Report
Independent Sector, 44 pages, April 2006
The Panel on the Nonprofit Sector has released a supplement to the Final Report it issued last year, which included recommendations intended to strengthen the accountability of the nation's charitable organizations. The Supplemental Report focuses on nine areas, including international grantmaking and charitable solicitation. As was true with the Final Report, its recommendations incorporate input from people across the U.S. charitable community. The work of the Panel and its Work Groups over the last 18 months has already had a substantial impact on the policies and practices of charitable organizations, and is clearly of interest to Congress and state legislative officials.
