Key Facts on Family Foundations
Foundation Center, 2007.
Half of the nation's nearly 34,000 grantmaking family foundations gave less than $50,000 in 2005, according to the Foundation Center's newly updated Key Facts on Family Foundations. Among larger family foundations, grantmaking priorities included education and health, followed by arts and culture and human services.

Sustaining Tradition:
The Andrus Family Philanthropy Program

When Surdna Foundation decided it wanted to involve all of the members of the founding Andrus family, they knew they were starting a formidable challenge. Historically, they had involved a select few members from each generation in the family's philanthropy and maintained a low public profile. Their new goal was to involve nearly 350 family members in eight branches, spread over three continents.

Online Knowledge Center and Teleconferences
The Minnesota Council on Foundations offers its members access to NCFP's Online Knowledge Center and Virtual Seminars. FP Online provides families, trustees and staff constant access and timely updates to cutting-edge information on trends, strategies and research for community-based philanthropy.
The FP Online Knowledge Center contains more than 700 articles, board discussion papers, checklists and sample forms providing practical advice and perspective on key topics. These resources are useful and appropriate for those new to family philanthropy, as well as for more experienced philanthropists and advisors.
In addition to the online knowledge center, MCF members can participate in Family Philanthropy Virtual Seminars, which feature experts in the field of family philanthropy. These monthly teleconferences, which normally cost $75, are available to MCF members at no charge.
