Minnesota Council on Foundations Rolls Out Philanthropy & Public Trust Program

Minnesota Council on Foundations is rolling out a comprehensive Philanthropy & Public Trust initiative for Minnesota foundations and corporate giving programs. Highlighting the effort are new Principles and Practices, an essential element of MCF’s commitment to public trust and accountability.

As part of the Philanthropy & Public Trust initiative, new publications, web communications, and resources and training programs will be available to all state funders. Two special publications will be mailed in May to MCF members and nonmember grantmakers:

Principles for Grantmakers & Practice Options for Philanthropic Organizations is a new publication that not only presents the these two important documents in one publication but also provides an additional chapter on exceptional practices around MCF’s diversity principle related to funder roles of grantmaker, board and/or employer, economic entity and civic participant.

What Every Grantmaker Should Know & Frequently Asked Legal Questions is a second new publication. Originally published in an MCF member newsletter in 2004, the "What Every Grantmaker Should Know" series has been updated with the latest information related to the Pension Protection Act of 2006. The Legal FAQs tool that has been available to MCF members for the past few years is also revised.

A Foundation Self-Assessment Tool, developed with the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers and referenced in both publications, will be available online. There are versions for both non-staffed and staffed private foundations.

The Philanthropy & Public Trust section of mcf.org will provide downloadable versions of all publications, as well as other resources to help Minnesota foundations and corporate giving programs know exactly what they need to do to act in the public trust. The Philanthropy & Public Trust initiative will infuse ongoing grantmaker programming. For additional information, e-mail info@mcf.org or call 612.338.1989.
