This survey was conducted by The Chronicle to determine which u.S. charities
raised the most in donations from individuals, foundations and corporations,
and outlines how the recession is affecting their fundraising.

Foundation Center
The “Focus on the Economic Crisis” webpage provides interactive
maps, research advisories and resource links.
Foundation Center’s Year-End Outlook for Giving and
the Sector
Based on fall 2009 survey responses from 600 foundations nationally,
this research advisory finds that 2009 foundation giving likely will decline
by more than 10 percent over 2008, and continued reductions are expected in
2010.
Minnesota Budget Project (MBP)
An initiative of the Minnesota Council of nonprofits, the MBP provides
independent research, analysis and advocacy on budget and tax issues through
its Minnesotabudgetbites blog and an unallotment resource page.

Minnesota Nonprofit Reports
The Minnesota Council of nonprofits released two reports in December 2009.
Key findings of the Nonprofit Current Conditions Report, based on surveys
conducted Dec. 1-8, 2009, include: Sixty percent of organizations reported
an increase in need for services, compared to 42 percent a year ago; and 61
percent reported declining revenue, up from 55 percent in 2008. MCN’s
Nonprofit Economy Report analyzes public data to describe nonprofits’
role in the state’s economy. among its key findings: In 2008, nonprofits
employed one out of every nine workers in Minnesota.
“On the Money”
Grantmakers for Effective Organizations’ subtitled this report “The key
Financial Challenges Facing nonprofits Today – and how Grantmakers Can
help.”
Recovery.gov “Track the Money”
Access lists of recovery act spending recipients by using the pull-down menu
to select “Minnesota.” View grant, loan and contract recipients, award
amounts and overseeing agencies.
Recovery.MN
The State of Minnesota’s coordination of American recovery and
reinvestment act efforts is managed by the Office of Minnesota Management
and budget.
“Smarter Grantmaking in Challenging Economic Times”
Based on conversations with hundreds of funders, Grantmakers for Effective
Organizations produced this briefing for foundation leaders to guide
decisions about how best to support grantees.

Hopeful Futures

This snapshot of grantmakers’ expectations for giving in 2010 is based on
surveys conducted in fall 2009 of 125 Minnesota grantmakers. The “Trends and
analysis” section of MCF’s website also includes past research reports on
giving in Minnesota.
Minnesota Grantmakers’ Responses to the Economy
This compilation of news items and grant guideline updates reflects how
Minnesota grantmakers are responding to the economic downturn.
