Giving in Minnesota Sample Trends:
Grantmaking by Geographic Area

This section describes the geographic trends in Minnesota grantmaking by the Giving in Minnesota sample of the 110 largest grantmakers in the state that made $1 million or more in grants. To analyze geographic trends and patterns of giving, the Council applies the Grants Classification System, or GCS, coding [see Methodology]. The geographic service areas include grants made to organizations serving the Twin Cities Metro Area, Greater Minnesota, the state and Areas Outside Minnesota. Although grants to organizations serving areas outside Minnesota include those with an international focus, these are limited to grants made to organizations based in the United States.1

Trends in Giving by Service Area

In 2004, the Giving in Minnesota sample gave more than half (59 percent) of grant dollars to organizations serving Minnesota, with the Twin Cities Metro Area at 34 percent, Greater Minnesota at 14 percent and other areas within the state at 11 percent. The state overall saw a 5-percent growth in giving, up from 54 percent in 2003 to 59 percent in 2004. Greater Minnesota and Areas Outside Minnesota witnessed the greatest shifts in percentage shares of grant dollars. Greater Minnesota saw a 5-percent share increase from 9 percent in 2003 to 14 percent in 2004, attributable to a $20 million gift by Blandin Foundation to Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital.2 The decrease in share of grant dollars to Areas Outside Minnesota, from 46 percent in 2003 to 40 percent in 2004, can be attributed to a one-time $20-million grant by The Minneapolis Foundation to Northwestern University in 2003.

Geographic Distribution by Grantmaker Type

In 2004, community/public foundations and private foundations had the highest shares of grant dollars to organizations serving Minnesota, with 81 percent and 70 percent, respectively. Corporate foundations and giving programs had the highest share of grant dollars made to Areas Outside Minnesota, at 61 percent.

Since 2001, each type of grantmaker has given its highest share of grant dollars to a different geographic service area.

Private Foundations
Private foundations increased their overall share of Minnesota giving by 4 percent, up from 66 percent in 2003 to 70 percent in 2004. There were, however shifts in private foundations’ share of Minnesota grant dollars. Both the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area and Greater Minnesota service areas had share increases, of 4 percent and 2 percent, respectively, and the Minnesota Statewide service area experienced a 2-percent decline. The decline in share of grant dollars in the Minnesota Statewide geographic service area can be attributed to $20-million grant from Blandin Foundation to the Grand Itasca Hospital & Clinic in 2004, which increased giving totals for the Greater Minnesota service area.

Corporate Foundations and Giving Programs
Corporate grantmakers increased their total share of grant dollars to Minnesota service areas, from 37 percent in 2003 to 39 percent in 2004. These grantmakers decreased their share of grant dollars to Areas Outside Minnesota by 3 percent, from 64 percent in 2003 to 61 percent in 2004. Corporate giving had a higher share of grant dollars allocated for Greater Minnesota, up from 3 percent in 2003 to 5 percent in 2004.

Community/Public Foundations
In 2004, community/public foundation grantmaking returned to a more historical share of Minnesota Total grants. Community/public foundations gave 81 percent of 2004 grant dollars to Minnesota, following a dip to 64 percent in 2003. Areas Outside Minnesota received a smaller share of grant dollars, down from 36 percent in 2003 to 19 percent. These shifts are related to The Minneapolis Foundation’s $20-million gift to Northwestern University in 2003.

1 The Council does not code grants made to organizations located outside the United States.
2 From time to time, large gifts can skew the comparisons and, in these cases, the gifts are mentioned in the discussion of trends and patterns of giving.
