Giving in Minnesota, 2007 Edition

ARTS, CULTURE & HUMANITIES

Grantmaking to Arts, Culture & Humanities (Arts) includes contributions to the Performing Arts, Museums, Media/Communication, Art/Cultural Organizations, Historical Societies, Visual Arts, Humanities and Arts Services.

In 2005, the Giving in Minnesota sample gave a total of $114 million in grants to the Arts, comprising a 16-percent share of total Minnesota grant dollars. The Performing Arts subcategory received the highest share of Arts grant dollars (33 percent), followed by Museums (18 percent), Other (17 percent) and Media/Communications (14 percent) (see Figure Q).

Trends in Arts Grantmaking

In Minnesota, Arts grant dollars steadily increased from 2002 to 2004, and then remained flat between 2004 ($114.4 million) and 2005 ($114.1 million) (see Figure R). The percentage share of grant dollars going to the Arts, however, continued to increase, growing from 13 percent in 2002 to 16 percent in 2005.

Minnesota's share of 2005 grant dollars going to the Arts (16 percent) was slightly higher than the national average (13 percent). Minnesota has had more fluctuations in shares of Arts grant dollars than has been true nationally (see Figure S). At the state level, the Arts' share has gone up or down by several percentage points every few years since 1992, until steady growth began in 2002. Nationally, Arts' share of total grantmaking has been either 12 or 13 percent since 1997.

Arts Grantmaking by Grantmaker Type

In 2005, private foundations and corporate foundations and giving programs each provided 44 percent of the grant dollars for the Arts, while community/public foundations contributed 11 percent (see Figure T and Table 16). The distribution was almost the same as in 2004. Arts was the only subject area where corporate grantmakers gave the largest share of grants dollars in 2005, and likely reflects Minnesota's long history of strong corporate support for the Arts.

Arts Grantmaking by Subcategory

The Performing Arts and Museums subcategories continued to receive the highest share of grant dollars among Arts subcategories in 2005 (33 percent and 18 percent, respectively) (see Figure U and Table 17). Both subcategories saw declines in their shares of grant dollars between 2004 and 2005, with Performing Arts' share decreasing by 2 percentage points and Museums' share decreasing by 3 percentage points.

Other Arts/Cultural Organizations experienced the biggest jump in its share of grant dollars of all Arts subcategories, with an increase of 6 percentage points (from 11 percent to 17 percent) between 2004 and 2005. Grantmaking in this subcategory in 2005 included increased money for fundraising, improving accessibility, increasing public awareness and education, and strengthening volunteer and information and referral programs. Other areas that posted gains in Arts grantmaking were Media/Communications, which increased its share by 2 percentage points, and Humanities, which saw a change of 1 percentage point.
