Giving in Minnesota, 2007 Edition

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

The International Affairs category encompasses organizations that promote international understanding; provide international development and relief; or address international human rights, security and peace, and other related issues.

In 2005, funders in the Giving in Minnesota sample gave nearly $15 million in International Affairs grants, comprising a 2 percent share of the state's total grant dollars. Among the five subcategories, International Development & Relief Services received the largest share of International Affairs grant dollars (58 percent) (see Figure AP).

Trends in International Grantmaking

After remaining at 1 percent since 1992, International Affairs' share of total grant dollars doubled to 2 percent in 2005, and 2005 Minnesota grant dollars to International Affairs also doubled from 2004 levels (see Table 13 and Figure AQ). This increase was due to several factors, including a $3.5 million grant from the WEM Foundation to Yale University for international activities, more and larger grants to International Affairs from The McKnight Foundation, and an overall growth in funding for international disaster aid.

International Affairs increased nationally in 2005 as well. After remaining at 3 percent for three years, the share of grants to International Affairs nationwide increased to 4 percent in 2005 (see Figure AR). The share of grant dollars going to International Affairs has been consistently higher nationally than in Minnesota. In 2005, Minnesota's share of grant dollars to International Affairs was half the national average (2 percent vs. 4 percent).

International Affairs Grantmaking by Grantmaker Type

In 2005, private foundations continued to provide the largest share of grant dollars to International Affairs (see Table 26 and Figure AS), as they have for many years. Specifically, private foundations awarded 68 percent of the 2005 grant dollars for International Affairs. This represents a slight increase from 65 percent in 2004, but is still smaller than these foundations' 82 percent share in 2003.

Corporate foundations and giving programs and community/public foundations gave similar shares of International Affairs grant dollars in 2005, 15 percent and 17 percent respectively. Corporate grantmakers' share of International Affairs grantmaking dropped by 5 percentage points from the previous year, while community/public foundations' share increased by 2 percentage points. Unlike the previous two years, community/public foundations' share of International Affairs grantmaking was higher than corporate grantmakers' share.

Other International Affairs had the second highest share, 35 percent, an increase of 28 percentage points from the previous year, due to the $3.5 million grant from the WEM Foundation to Yale University for international activities.

2005 saw sharp declines in Minnesota grantmaking for International Human Rights and Promotion of International Understanding. Both of these subcategories received 3 percent of International Affairs grant dollars in 2005, which represented a drop of 6 percentage points for International Human Rights and 8 percentage points for Promotion of International Understanding.
