Giving in Minnesota, 2007 Edition

RELIGION

The Religion category includes grants to all worship and faith-based organizations. Grant recipients include churches, synagogues, councils (for example, the Council of Churches) and associations.

In 2005, Religion received nearly $23 million in grant dollars from the grantmakers in the Giving in Minnesota sample, which accounted for 3 percent of all Minnesota grants. The Christian subcategory received the bulk of the 2005 Religion grant dollars (see Figure AZ).

Trends in Religion Grantmaking

Minnesota grant dollars to Religion declined by one-third between 2004 and 2005 (see Table 13 and Figure BA). This decline was due primarily to the fact that the 2005 Giving in Minnesota sample did not include the Garmar Foundation and Wallestad Foundation, two grantmakers from the previous year's sample that give primarily to Religion. The drop in Religion funding can also be attributed in part to a lower level of grantmaking for Religion by the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation.

During a 10-year period from 1994 to 2004, Minnesota grantmakers gave a higher share of their grant dollars to Religion than the national average. But in 2005, the shares were equal (3 percent), due to a decrease of 2 percentage points in Minnesota and an increase of 1 percentage point at the national level (see Figure BB).

Religion Funding by Grantmaker Type

For the third year in a row, community/public foundations provided the largest share of Minnesota grantmaking (51 percent) for Religion (see Table 30 and Figure BC). Notably, the share of community/public foundations' grants for Religion increased 10 percentage points from 2004, after a decrease of 16 percentage points the previous year.

Community/public foundations' relatively high level of Religion grantmaking is due in large part to giving from their donor-advised funds. Research by Independent Sector has shown that individual donors give more to Religion than any other area, and many individual donors give to their favorite religious organizations and causes through donor-advised funds at community/public foundations.

Private foundations continued to provide the second-largest share of Religion grant dollars (40 percent) in 2005, and this share remained unchanged from the previous year.

Corporate grantmakers' share of Religion grantmaking dropped by 11 percentage points, from 19 percent in 2004 to just 8 percent in 2005, due in part to the drop in funding from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation mentioned previously.

Largest Religion Grantmakers

Minnesota's five largest Religion grantmakers in 2005:
  1. Lutheran Community Foundation
  2. The Minneapolis Foundation
  3. The Saint Paul Foundation
  4. Catholic Community Foundation in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis
  5. The Sabes Family Foundation

Trends in Religion Grantmaking by Subcategory

In 2005, the Christian subcategory received the largest share of the state's Religion grants, even though its share of Religion grant dollars dropped by 23 percentage points from 2004 (see Figure BD and Table 31). This large decrease is due in part to changes in the organizations comprising the 100 largest grantmakers for the Giving in Minnesota sample. The 2005 sample did not include the Garmar Foundation and Wallestad Foundation, two grantmakers from the previous year's sample that give primarily to the Christian subcategory.

Grantmaking to the Jewish subcategory increased significantly in 2005, with the share of Religion grants dollars to Jewish organizations and causes jumping from 5 percent in 2004 to 18 percent in 2005, primarily due to a $1.5 million contribution to the Minneapolis Jewish Federation's annual campaign from Sabes Family Foundation. Interfaith Issues/Organizations' share of Religion grant dollars also increased, from 2 percent in 2004 to 8 percent in 2004.
