Key Findings

Key findings on 2002 charitable giving in Minnesota:

  • Total charitable giving declines for second straight year. Charitable giving in Minnesota totaled $4.18 billion from individuals, foundations and corporations, a decline of less than 1 percent from 2001. This follows a slightly smaller decrease between 2000 and 2001.
       
  • Giving by individuals rebounds slightly. Individuals gave $3.28 billion to charity, an increase of less than 1 percent from 2001.
       
  • Foundation/corporate grants decrease for first time in nearly 20 years. Foundations and corporations gave $893 million in charitable grants, a decline of 5 percent from 2001, which is the first such decrease since 1984.
       
  • Foundation assets flat. Foundation assets grew 2 percent from 2001 to 2002 (a 1 percent decline when adjusted for inflation). This is the second year in a row that the state's total foundation assets have declined in constant dollars, after an 8 percent drop in 2001.
       
  • Grants to Minnesota increase. Grantmakers gave 61 percent of their grants to Minnesota, which is the highest level since 1990.
      
  • Continued growth in Health grants. Health organizations saw the biggest growth in grants, increasing 7 percent, which follows a 24 percent increase between 1999 and 2001.
       
  • Arts grantmaking loses ground. Arts, culture and humanities organizations saw the biggest drop in grants, decreasing 22 percent.
