Findings
Key findings on 2002 charitable giving in Minnesota:

Total charitable giving declines for second straight year.
Charitable
giving in Minnesota totaled $4.18 billion from individuals,
foundations and corporations, a decline of less than 1 percent from
2001. This follows a slightly smaller decrease between 2000 and 2001.

Giving by individuals rebounds slightly.
Individuals gave
$3.28 billion to charity, an increase of less than 1 percent from
2001.

Foundation/corporate grants decrease for first time in nearly 20
years.
Foundations and corporations gave $893 million in
charitable grants, a decline of 5 percent from 2001, which is the
first such decrease since 1984.

Foundation assets flat.
Foundation assets grew 2 percent from
2001 to 2002 (a 1 percent decline when adjusted for inflation). This
is the second year in a row that the state's total foundation assets
have declined in constant dollars, after an 8 percent drop in 2001.

Grants to Minnesota increase.
Grantmakers gave 61 percent of
their grants to Minnesota, which is the highest level since 1990.

Continued growth in Health grants.
Health organizations saw
the biggest growth in grants, increasing 7 percent, which follows a 24
percent increase between 1999 and 2001.

Arts grantmaking loses ground.
Arts, culture and humanities
organizations saw the biggest drop in grants, decreasing 22 percent.
