Minnesota Health
Grantmaking
Giving in Minnesota, 2009
Edition
|
Health grantmaking includes the
following four subcategories: general and rehabilitative health
(which includes funding for hospitals and nursing homes, primary
care, and outpatient facilities); mental health/crisis intervention;
multipurpose health (which includes funding for services associated
with specific diseases); and medical research.
Information in this fact sheet is
based on an analysis of 27,243 grants of $2,000 or more, made by a
sample of 100 of the largest grantmakers in Minnesota. The total
giving of these 100 large grantmakers accounted for approximately 82
percent of all grant dollars paid in the state in 2007, the latest
year for which complete data are available.

How Much is Granted to Health?
Grantmakers in the sample gave $96.1 million to health in 2007, up slightly
from $93.4 million in 2006; this represents an increase of 3 percent. Of
eight subject areas, the share of grant dollars dedicated to health was 10
percent in 2007; in 2005 and 2006, health captured 11 percent of the grant
dollars in the sample.
Where Do Health
Dollars Go?
The general and rehabilitative health subcategory received the largest share
of the sample’s health dollars, as it has in previous years. Fifty-nine
percent of the health dollars, or $57 million, funded this area, with the
majority of the dollars going to hospitals, nursing homes, primary care, and
outpatient facilities. Multipurpose health, which includes funding for
services associated with specific diseases, received the second largest
share of the sample’s grant dollars – 21 percent or $19.7 million. Funding
for medical research and mental health/crisis intervention – the two
smallest subcategories within health – both declined in 2007, by 35 percent
and 9 percent, respectively.
What Types of Grantmakers Fund Health?
Private foundations in the sample provided the largest amount of
funding for health, at just under $50 million, or 52 percent of the giving
to this subject area. Corporate grantmakers in the sample gave a similar
share to health as in previous years – 34 percent. Their health giving
totaled $32.8 million. Community/public foundations’ giving to health
totaled $13.4 million in 2007, a 28 percent decrease from 2006.

sample in 2007:
- Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation
- The Medtronic Foundation
