Family Foundation Resource Center

Family foundations are private foundations whose grantmaking is directed primarily by the founder and/or the founder's family. Family philanthropy lets donors and their families build their own values into their giving.

The resources and information on this page will provide those engaged in family giving the latest thinking, information and resources to strengthen family values through engaged giving as well as create a meaningful difference in the communities and organizations they fund. Some of the information is available only to MCF members (noted with an asterisk).

Through a partnership with the National Center for Family Philanthropy, MCF family foundation members have complimentary access to monthly national teleconferences and an extensive, searchable knowledgebase of articles, reports and tools of particular interest to family foundations and donors.

MCF family foundation members include large to very small family foundations, both staffed and trustee-led. They are our largest member group.  If you are interested in learning more about joining MCF’s community of family grantmakers, contact Chuck Peterson, Vice President of Member Services and Operations, at cpeterson@mcf.org.

Families Step Up to Meet Economic Crisis
Results of an informal survey done in late 2008 and early 2009 by the National Center for Family Philanthropy show how family foundations are moving forward during the current economic crisis.
