July 2001

OVERVIEW

The "Arts Capital & Endowment Campaigns in Minnesota 2001" report presents the results of the Minnesota Council on Foundations' 2001 survey of capital and endowment campaigns for arts, cultural and humanities organizations in Minnesota. The report shows the survey responses of organizations that completed campaigns in 2000, are currently conducting a campaign, or are anticipating a campaign in the next five years.

The Council hopes the information presented in this report will foster a productive dialogue to help grantmakers and nonprofits perform their work more efficiently and effectively. The report demonstrates the commitment of the Council and its members to be effective partners with nonprofits to meet community needs. The report was underwritten by The McKnight Foundation on behalf of a working group of private and corporate grantmakers interested in discussing funding issues in the arts.

KEY FINDINGS

MCF's 2001 arts capital & endowment campaigns survey revealed the following:

  • There are 112 current and anticipated arts, cultural and humanities capital or endowment campaigns in Minnesota with a combined goal of more than $471.3 million -- by far the highest number and dollar goal of such campaigns since MCF began tracking these figures in 1989, even when adjusted for inflation.

  • At least 72 anticipated arts, cultural and humanities capital or endowment campaigns plan to raise $220.3 million in the next five years. The total dollar goal of anticipated campaigns has increased more than 2,000 percent since 1997, the last time MCF conducted a study, and is the highest anticipated dollar amount ever recorded by MCF.

  • Currently, at least 40 arts, cultural and humanities capital and endowment campaigns in Minnesota are seeking to raise more than $250.9 million.

  • Minnesota's arts, cultural and humanities organizations completed at least $161.2 million in capital and endowment campaigns in 2000.

METHODOLOGY / LIMITATIONS

The "Arts Capital & Endowment Campaigns in Minnesota 2001" report contains information provided by 167 survey respondents from January through February 2001. When reviewing the report, please keep these points in mind:

  • The report represents a snapshot of current or planned capital and endowment campaigns at a specific point in time.  For the most up-to-date information on a specific campaign, MCF suggests contacting the nonprofit organization directly.

  • Because organizations provided information for the report on a voluntary basis, the report does not include all organizations that are conducting campaigns.

  • Because the same organizations are not compared year after year, it is important to use caution when interpreting the data over time.
