2009 Giving Forecast by Minnesota Grantmakers

Foundation(s) Response
Joint Initiative: F.R. Bigelow Foundation, Greater Twin Cities United Way and The Minneapolis Foundation Together committed $550,000 to help 40 emergency food shelves assist individuals and families
Ameriprise Financial, Inc. Gave $500,000 to Feeding America. Additional hunger-relief in 2009 with goal of 50,000 volunteer hours and an additional 3.5 million meals
Blandin Foundation Donated $380,000 to food bank, heating assistance and transitional housing (PDF)
Bush Foundation Honoring all prior and transitional commitments
Patrick and Aimee Butler Family Foundation Special Projects giving focused on basic needs
Cargill Gave $5 million to emergency hunger relief
Deluxe Corporation Foundation Made $500,000 grant to FastTrac LaunchPad, which offers entrepreneurial training to those who have lost jobs and to entrepreneurs with struggling businesses
Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation Expanding guidelines to include one-time general operating support grants
Ecolab Foundation Initiated $500,000 hunger-relief matching gift program
General Mills Community Action Maintaining or slightly increasing 2009 giving Directing additional money to nonprofit organizations serving international communities where General Mills has business operations -- to alleviate hunger and improve nutrition
Initiative Foundation Awarding $3.1 million in grants and business financing; almost 60% of grants will help distressed families, workers and small businesses
Jerome Foundation Distributing more than in 2007-08, but less than it planned to commit
John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Honoring all existing pledges and grants
The McKnight Foundation Providing $10 million to communities impacted by foreclosure crisis
The McKnight Foundation Increasing percentage drawn from endowment, but fewer funds available for grantseekers
Medica Foundation Increased 2009 giving budget by 25%
The Minnesota Community Foundation and The Saint Paul Foundation The Minnesota Community Foundation and The Saint Paul Foundation have created a new community economic relief fund. They have committed $2 million to the fund and have already awarded $800 thousand through the fund to various local agencies working in the areas of hunger relief, housing stability, financial counseling and assistance.
Northwest Minnesota Foundation Community Connections Program: helping nonprofits and public agencies provide critical services, increase effectiveness and diversify funding sources
Otto Bremer Foundation Focusing Twin Cities funding on programs and initiatives to relieve poverty -- now and long-term
Otto Bremer Foundation Bremer Emergency Fund: gave $4.2 million to community organizations providing emergency financial assistance to families and individuals
Pohlad Family Foundation Committed $20 million to support small business, improve neighborhoods and retain nonprofit services
Rochester Area Foundation Prioritizing basic needs -- food, shelter & clothing -- for 2009. Suspended new capital campaign funding
Target Continuing to give 5% of profits to charity
Women's Foundation of Minnesota Increasing 2009 grants by 4%. Funds are multi-year to help organizations plan for more stable funding
