McKnight Commits Funds to Statewide Affordable Housing and Community Development

The McKnight Foundation, Minneapolis, has shown its commitment to affordable housing and community development in its first-quarter 2005 grantmaking.

In the area of affordable housing, the foundation committed almost $20 million to three organizations in Minnesota. Greater Minnesota Housing Fund in St. Paul received $9.5 million over two years to improve services for comprehensive community development and affordable housing needs for working families in greater Minnesota. The Family Housing Fund of Minneapolis received $10 million over two years to address the Twin Cities region's affordable housing needs. The Greater Metropolitan Housing Corporation of the Twin Cities, an affordable housing development and assistance organization in Minneapolis, received $400,000 over two years in support of general operations.

In the area of community development, the foundation awarded $100,000 over two years for the Minnesota Environmental Initiative in Minneapolis, to develop and execute the sustainable redevelopment of urban infill properties. In St. Paul, East Side Neighborhood Development Company received $160,000 over two years for the Lower Phalen Creek Project, an effort to revitalize the Mississippi River floodplain in St. Paul.

The foundation also made grants in the areas of the arts, children and families, the environment, international, and collaborative crop research. In total, The McKnight Foundation awarded 34 grants totaling $29,332,790 in its first-quarter 2005 grantmaking. For a complete list of grants, visit the foundation’s Web site.
