Former Worthington Daily Globe Employees Establish Vance Fellowship Fund More than 20 former employees of the Worthington Daily Globe have created a new intern program at the newspaper through a donor-advised fund at Southwest Minnesota Foundation. Named the Vance Fellowship, the three-month intern experiences at the Worthington, Minn. newspaper were triggered by the May 6 death of James L. Vance of Worthington. Vance is remembered, among several things, for pioneering work in cold type and offset newspaper production, promotion of photography, special journalistic enterprises and enlightened employee relations. The fellowship also is a tribute to the late V.M. Vance, who founded the Daily Globe in 1940, and to the late Robert Vance, elder brother of James Vance, who made the newspaper a viable and thriving business enterprise, along with encouraging innovation. Owen Van Essen of Santa Fe, N.M., a former Daily Globe co-publisher and spokesman for the employee group, said, "These people all feel they had an out-of-ordinary opportunity and out-of-ordinary work experience at the Daily Globe. They want to attempt to give this opportunity to others in the journalism profession. In years to come, we hope the Vance Fellowship will be a badge of prestige in the journalism profession." The Southwest Minnesota Foundation, Hutchinson, will serve as the fiscal host for the Vance Fellowship and provide ongoing administrative support. |
