Blandin Foundation Awards Community Economic Advantage Grants Statewide

The board of trustees of the Blandin Foundation, Grand Rapids, approved community economic advantage grants in Grand Rapids and around the state at its June board meeting.

The foundation awarded six grants and a program related investment in the Grand Rapids area totaling $1,840,000 in economic advantage grants and $240,700 in responsive and sustaining grants. The grants are:

  • $1.5 million Community Economic Advantage (CEA) program-related investment to the Itasca Development Corp. (IDC) to support a building development fund and a $100,000 four-year grant for support of the Greenway Area Business Association.

  • $200,000 over five years to support the Itasca County Trails Task Force in which the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation is the fiscal agent.

  • $50,000 for the development of a new skate and skate board park.

  • $110,700 over two years to Advocates for Family Peace to support a Federal supervised visitation pilot project.

  • $80,000 over two years to support the Itasca Area Crisis Nursery.

  • "The June grants reflect the foundation’s commitment to strengthening the area economy and at the same time being responsive to community needs and support high-performing local organizations," said Wade Fauth, Blandin Foundation’s grant director.

    The foundation’s board also approved seven statewide Community Economic Advantage (CEA) grants including $6,250,000 to The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to acquire forest conservation easements and up to $250,000 for the Red Lake Band of Chippewa at Red Lake, Minn. This was a special grant awarded in the wake of the March 21, 2005 tragedy on the reservation.

    The other statewide grants are:

  • $750,000 over three years to the Minnesota Center for Rural Health to provide operating support for the center to continue the Blandin Health Care Leadership Program.

  • $150,000 over two years to Bemidji State University for the development of the "Ingenuity Frontier," a group of 23 associated organizations to encourage a culture of engineering innovation in northern Minnesota; increase the pool of engineering talent in the region; increase the availability of investment capital in the region; and increase the visibility of northern Minnesota as a hub of engineering talent and innovation.

  • $150,000 to Artspace Project, Inc., to support the development of the Franklin Artists Lofts in Brainerd.

  • $52,000 to Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) to support a five-part public radio and Internet series on the economic future of rural communities.

  • $15,000 to Independent School District 482 (Little Falls) to help the district offer vocational and technical courses in the Little Falls Middle School for joint high school and college credit.
