Otto Bremer Foundation Invests in Nonprofit Advocacy, Programs for Immigrants

The Otto Bremer Foundation, St. Paul, has supported nonprofit advocacy efforts and programs for immigrants in its recent round of grantmaking.

In the area of nonprofit advocacy, the foundation awarded $100,000 to Headwaters Foundation for Justice, Minneapolis, for the Democracy Fund, a collaborative that works to support nonprofit advocacy. The foundation also awarded $15,000 to Reach for Resources, Hopkins, to improve the advocacy capacity of this organization that works with people with cognitive disabilities. The Minnesota Youth Service Association, New Hope, received a $52,245 grant to support a state-wide youth advocacy and legislative reform initiative over two years.

In the area of immigrant programs, the foundation provided $75,000 to New Americans Community Services, St. Paul, for a demographic and needs assessment of African immigrants in Ramsey and Hennepin counties. ISAIAH, Minneapolis, received $100,000 over two years for organizational development and the Civil Right for Immigrants Campaign. The foundation also awarded $20,000 for general operations at the African Credit Education and Financial Counseling Agency, which serves immigrant women business owners.

In total, the trustees of the Otto Bremer Foundation awarded 67 grants totaling $4,259,373 in May 2005.
