Northland Foundation Helps Strengthen Families

The Northland Foundation, Duluth, supported numerous efforts to strengthen families in northeast Minnesota as part the grants it awarded between January and March 2004.

The foundation's recent funding includes two grants to support after-school activities. Lakeside-Lester Park Community Club, Duluth, received $20,000 to provide safe, supervised, after-school programming to middle school children in the Lakeside-Lester Park neighborhoods. North Central 4-H, International Falls, received $16,226 for after-school programming for students in grades K-12.

A number of organizations received grants from Northland to support various types of leadership and life skills training for youth. The foundation awarded grants to Copeland Community Center, Duluth ($16,500), for money management, job skills and employment opportunities for young people in the Harbor View neighborhood; Duluth Public Schools ($8,500), for leadership training and service learning opportunities to young people in area schools; Floodwood Community Education ($1,000), for interactive training focused on character development, positive choices and respect issues for young people and community members; PATH Minnesota, Duluth ($5,000), to assist youth in out-of-home placements gain independent living skills and identify career opportunities; and UMD TeenLife Center, Hibbing ($20,000), to support adolescent girls' groups that encourage positive choices and build problem-solving skills.

Other efforts to strengthen families that received funding from the foundation include the Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, Duluth, which received a $20,000 grant to increase parenting skills for families at risk, and Little Treasures Center, Inc., Duluth, which received $15,000 to support high-quality child care services to families.
