Emmett Carson Elected Chair of Council on Foundations

Emmett D. Carson, president and CEO of The Minneapolis Foundation, has been elected to serve a two-year term as chair of the board of the Council on Foundations in Washington, D.C., a membership organization of more than 2,000 grantmaking foundations and corporate giving programs worldwide. Carson was elected on April 28 at the Council's annual conference in Toronto.

"The Council has a strong tradition of supporting the field of philanthropy," said Carson. "I look forward to chairing the board as we strive to create stronger leadership, higher standards, and an even greater legacy for the Council and the field." Carson previously served as vice chair of the Council's board.

Two other Minnesotans were re-elected to the Council's board: Ron McKinley, executive director of the National Network of Grantmakers, based in Minneapolis; and Karl Stauber, president of Northwest Area Foundation, St. Paul.

Carson is the third Minnesotan to chair the board of the Council on Foundations. Others were the late James Shannon (1984-1985), who was director of the General Mills Foundation at the time, and Humphrey Doermann (1990-1991), then president of the Bush Foundation.
