Duluth Community Foundation Supports Local Arts Groups

The Duluth-Superior Area Community Foundation supported several local arts and cultural groups as part of its latest grant awards. At its meeting on October 6, 2004, the foundation's board of trustees awarded 30 grants totaling $61,483 to nonprofit organizations in its nine-county service region, including 10 grants to support the arts.

The foundation's arts grants include new funding for two local museums. The Tweed Museum of Art at the University of Minnesota-Duluth received a $1,775 grant to support the Wing Young Huie Exhibit. The Duluth Children's Museum received a $1,000 grant for the Whole World Festival and a $3,000 grant for the "Children Just Like Me" Exhibit.

To support local choral music, the foundation awarded $1,400 to the Arrowhead Chorale for the Gospel Music Collaboration and $1,750 to the Lake Superior Youth Chorus for the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir Exchange. The foundation also funded local dance with grants of $1,000 to the American National Ballet, Duluth, for "A Renaissance in Dance," and $675 to the Ely Voyageur Winter Festival for a dance workshop and performance.

Other recipients of the foundation's arts and cultural grants include the Duluth Area Dulcimer Club, $650 for Dulcimer Day in Duluth; Duluth-Superior Area Educational TV Corporation - WDSE, Duluth, $2,000 for underwriting; Duluth-Superior Symphony Association, Duluth, $1,100 for the Senior Accessibility Project; and the Sacred Heart Music Center, Duluth, $1,500 for the Distinguished Artists Series.

The foundation's largest grant - $5,500 - went to the Range Respite Program in Virginia, Minn. The foundation awarded general operating grants to North Country R.I.D.E., Esko, Minn. ($5,000) and Virginia Teen Center, Virginia, Minn. ($1,500).

Other recipients for the Duluth-Superior Area Community Foundation's latest grants include:

  • Ashland/Bayfield County League of Women Voters, Washburn, Wis., $1,000 for Health Care Public Education Series.
       
  • Bois Forte Band of Chippewa, Nett Lake, Minn., $1,000 for Bois Forte Heritage Center.
      
  • Center for Independent Living, Hibbing, $5,000 for Internet Outreach Project.
      
  • Charities Review Council, St. Paul, $500 for Nonprofit Accountability Workshop in Duluth.
       
  • Damiano of Duluth, Inc., $4,000 for Housing Services Program.
       
  • Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory, Duluth, $1,000 for Riverfront Community School field trips.
       
  • Legal Aid Service of Northeastern Minnesota, Virginia, $5,000 for Hibbing Outreach Office.
       
  • Minnesota Senior Federation - Northeast, Duluth, $2,000 for Senior Partners Care Program.
       
  • Northland Gay Men's Center, Duluth, $1,000 for support groups.
       
  • Planned Parenthood of Minnesota/South Dakota, St. Paul, $1,405 for Teen Council Program in Duluth.
       
  • Project SOAR of Northeastern Minnesota, Duluth, $1,000 for staff development.
       
  • The Salvation Army - Duluth, $5,000 for Money Management Program Iron Range.
       
  • S.N.A.P., Makinen, Minn., $2,000 for Spay Neuter Program.
       
  • St. Ann's Residence, Duluth, $278 for chair support and $1,950 for Accessibility Project.
       
  • YWCA of Duluth, Duluth, $1,500 for Racial Justice Program.

Grants were made from several funds of the foundation including: the John T. and Elizabeth C. Adams Arts Fund , Anishinabe Fund, Samuel F. Atkins and Barbara H. Atkins Memorial Fund, Central Mesabi Fund for Human Services, Global Awareness Fund, Riverfront Community Fund, G. Kendall Smith Fund for the Physically Disabled and Visually Impaired, and the Wirtanen Family Fund.
