Comcast Employees Volunteer at Lake Elmo Park Reserve

More than 600 Twin Cities Comcast employees and their family members joined Great River Greening at Lake Elmo Park Reserve on Oct. 15 to restore the natural areas and prairies within the park as part of the annual Comcast Cares Day.

Volunteers collected over 200 pounds of seed, valued at over $5,000, to restore 10 acres of prairie land. Members of the "Buckthorn Bullies" team cleared away enough buckthorn from the shores of Lake Elmo to fill the area of a football field. Volunteers on the "One Flew Over the Comcast Nest" team built 40 bluebird and wood duck houses and constructed a bird-viewing blind the size of an icehouse for future park visitors to enjoy. Youth volunteers created a Comcast Cares Kids quilt that was donated to Great River Greening.

Lake Elmo Park Reserve, a Washington County park, covers nearly 2,200 acres and is home to such wildlife as pheasants, weasels, red fox, woodpeckers and white-tailed deer. Eighty percent of the park is set aside for preservation and protection.

Comcast Cares also contributes volunteer time to numerous other area organizations, including Neighborhood House, Saint Paul Public Schools, United Way and the Salvation Army.
