Duluth Superior Area Foundation Celebrates 25
Years With Bush Foundation Grant
June 23, 2008
The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation celebrated its 25th anniversary with a $1 million challenge grant from the Bush Foundation. The gift kicks off Duluth Superior's goal of increasing its unrestricted funds by $5 million by 2010. Bush also awarded the foundation $300,000 in operating revenue to support community initiatives.
"We are already well on our way to the first $1 million," said Sampson. "Growing our unrestricted funds is critical to our mission. These funds allow us to meet the emerging needs of our region and place resources where the need is greatest. Just think where we will be in another 25 years, at our 50th anniversary."
The foundation was established in 1983 with a $15,000 administrative grant from
the Blandin Foundation. Twenty-five years later, the foundation holds $53
million in assets and has given $28 million in grants.
"I believe the theme of our celebration ("From Vision to Vibrance. Celebrating a Quarter Century of Dreams Achieved") really captures what we've accomplished in 25 years, and we want to express our appreciation," said Holly C. Sampson, foundation president. "The
community foundation was started with a 'vision' to help make the Duluth-Superior area a better place, and from there we've gown into a 'vibrant' and vital part of the community."
The foundation announced the first of five scheduled grants to the community in 2008: $25,000 to the City of Duluth to replace the playground on the end of Park Point. The foundation will also grant four $2,500 gifts to its regional affiliates in the Apostle Islands, Grand Marias, Two Harbors and Hermantown this year.
