The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation relaunched its Small Business Education Scholarship, which provides funds for small business owners and entrepreneurs to continue their education and learn the skills necessary to succeed in business. Since its establishment with a grant from the Employers Council, the fund has made almost $50,000 in scholarships available to capitalists in the area.


The McKnight Foundation awarded the six Minnesota Initiative Foundations (MIFs) a three-year, $3-million grant to expand the Minnesota Early Childhood Initiative... A Campaign for Our Youngest Children. In the fall, the MIFs plan to add 12 early childhood coalitions, raising the statewide network of coalitions to 78. The initiative was launched in 2003 with the support of The McKnight Foundation, which provided a second grant in 2005. Already over 400 projects and programs, known as Promising Strategies, have been implemented as an outgrowth of coalition work in early childhood communities throughout the state.
Comcast Corporation supported literacy programming through the Library Foundation of Hennepin County's Pen Pals author lecture series with a $25,000 gift and an additional $25,000 Comcast Foundation grant to support library outreach initiatives for new immigrants. In its 11th season, the series is the longest-running, most highly respected lecture series in the Twin Cities. The series features authors of national stature who speak about the influences on their work, their process and their experiences as a writer.
Best Buy awarded 1,551 scholarships totaling more than $2.75 million to graduating high-school seniors across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Scholarships of $10,000 were awarded to 51 students, and an additional 1,500 students will each receive $1,500 scholarships. In addition, eight U.S. school districts, including the Saint Paul Public Schools, have each received a $100,000 Best Buy Teach Award, which honors the efforts of schools and districts nationwide to engage K-12 students through exceptional, creative use of interactive technology in the classroom.
In an effort to the meet ever-growing demands for top talent in the agribusiness industry, CHS and Agriculture Future of America (AFA) expanded their partnership. CHS is making a $40,000 contribution that will help AFA provide quality programs and experiences for college students and will sponsor 20 students, including CHS and cooperative system interns, to the annual AFA Leaders Conference. The CHS Foundation also awarded $37,500 in scholarships to two-year college students studying agriculture.
PFund awarded $56,225 in student scholarships for 2008, the largest annual scholarship award pool in PFund’s 20-year history. Scholarship recipients, ranging from high school to graduate students in both public and private schools, are GLBT or come from a GLBT family. They all help advance awareness and support of GLBT issues, spurring visibility and dialogue on key issues.
The Medtronic Foundation awarded a multi-year, $135,000 grant to the College of St. Catherine for the Montessori track of a new graduate STEM certificate program. The new project will begin this summer and run for three years, providing K-8 teachers with two weeks of hands-on teacher training followed by an academic year of mentoring and support.
AgStar Fund for Rural America awarded $10,000 to the GFW (Gibbon, Fairfax, Winthrop) High School to purchase equipment for the natural resources, plant science and exploring ag classes. The school supports the importance of agriculture in the school by offering students educational experiences where they can do relevant coursework and apply what they have learned toward solving real-world issues.
The Iowa State University College of Engineering received a second $500,000 commitment from the 3M Foundation for the Engineering Leadership Program. The gift will continue to be used to fund scholarships, program development and student leadership activities. At full strength, the program will have 60 3M scholars; currently there are 38. ELP provides a comprehensive approach to engineering leadership, focusing not only on academic performance, but also on specific skills and engagement with communities beyond the classroom.
