Frey Foundation Awards Challenge Grant to The Jeremiah Program

The Frey Foundation has issued a challenge grant to support the Twin Cities-based Jeremiah Program's expansion into Saint Paul's Summit University neighborhood. A nonprofit organization that serves low-income, single mothers and their children, The Jeremiah Program will build a second campus at 932 Concordia Avenue.

The Frey Challenge Grant is designed to encourage individuals and family foundations to support the development of Jeremiah's Saint Paul campus. New gifts from individuals and family foundations for The Jeremiah Program will be matched, dollar for dollar. Additionally, any current donors who increase their gift by at least 10 percent will also qualify for matching. The Frey Foundation has been a supporter of The Jeremiah Program since its inception in 1997.

To establish the Saint Paul Campus, The Jeremiah Program has set a $5 million private fundraising goal, which will include gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations. The balance of funds for the $13 million campaign will be generated through Low-Income Housing Tax Credits.

The Jeremiah Program provides opportunities for motivated low-income, single mothers and their children to become economically self-reliant. In exchange for housing and support services which include coaching, life skill education and parenting, women make a commitment to pay 1/3 of their income for rent, and they must work and attend school at least part-time. On average, graduates earn $14 per hour and open the doors for their future earning potential.
