General Mills Foundation Sponsors 21,000 Minneapolis Students in the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award Challenge

More than 21,000 Minneapolis Public Schools students are participating in the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award Challenge, a six-week fitness program that encourages students to reach the goal of one hour of physical activity five days a week. This is a cumulative total for the day and can include physical education classes, sports, recess, walking and more.

Through the efforts of Achieve!Minneapolis, the General Mills Foundation has donated nearly $250,000 in the past four years to support the district's efforts in the Presidential Challenge. All students in Minneapolis K-5, K-8 and middle school classes participating in the challenge will receive a water bottle, logo pencil, activity log book, and yellow wristband with the words "I am a champion." Participating teachers and staff will receive an instructional book and pedometer. Students who reach their goal will receive a PALA badge and certificate.

"The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award helps kids incorporate fitness into their daily routine, not only for healthy growth and development, but throughout their lives," said Ellen Luger, executive director of the General Mills Foundation. "It is our intention to build local connections and, most importantly, to help instill good, healthy lifestyle habits that will last a lifetime for America's kids."
