The Travelers Companies and its two private foundations, Travelers Foundation and Travelers Connecticut Foundation, awarded $15.5 million to charitable organizations nationwide in fiscal year 2006. Giving is focused on education, community development and arts and culture.
- $201,000 to the Minnesota Private College Fund's Urban Education Scholarship Program that supports 22 low-income Minnesota students of color pursuing urban teaching careers
- $250,000 to Twin Cities Local Initiatives Support Corporation to support the development of affordable housing and commercial development in low-income neighborhoods
- $325,000 in grants to COMPAS to fund community-based arts programming in Minnesota schools and nonprofit agencies

Wells Fargo made a $650,000 investment in the Initiative Foundation's technology capital fund. The fund, which has invested more than $3 million in loans to central Minnesota technology-based businesses, helps launch high-tech business ventures and integrate technology into operations. |

The McKnight Foundation awarded 34 grants totaling $8.5 million in its first-quarter 2007 grantmaking. More than $1.6 million went to four organizations working to restore and maintain a healthy, sustainable environment in the Mississippi River basin. Land conservation is the shared goal of two of these organizations:
- The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, based in Des Moines, received $1 million over two years for the Blufflands Alliance, a multistate collaboration working to preserve the bluffland region of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois
- The Center for Rural Affairs of Lyons, Nebraska, was awarded a two-year grant of $90,000 for its work to improve federal policies that advance sustainable farming

The Northland Foundation awarded 59
grants totaling $209,667 during the first quarter of 2007. Many of
the grants will help strengthen the physical and emotional
well-being, economic stability, educational opportunities and access
to support services for families throughout northeastern Minnesota.
Other grants will help older adults remain active and independent
and support early care and education programs. |
