The McKnight Foundation awarded 122 grants totaling $14.4 million in its second-quarter 2007 grantmaking. $560,000 went to eight organizations working to improve the economic vitality of neighborhoods in Minneapolis, St. Paul and surrounding areas. Among these, the African Development Center received a three-year grant of $150,000 to provide support to new and existing African-owned businesses in Minnesota; The Lexington-Hamline Community Council, Inc., received $20,000 to support a neighborhood strategy for the re-use of scattered-site housing to maintain stability; Neighborhood Development Center received $75,000 to strengthen the Midtown Global Market by supporting a one-year assessment, development of a business improvement plan and increased marketing; and the Northeast Community Development Corporation received $35,000 to support the Northeast Futures project, a community-organizing initiative that will help residents and businesses identify and contribute shared values and a common vision to Minneapolis's 2008 comprehensive plan.

The Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P. Foundation for
Education, Public Health and Social Justice awarded a grant of
$100,000 to the Minnesota Thrive Initiative. The
goal of the initiative, a project of the Minnesota Initiative
Foundations (MIFs), is to create seamless systems or networks of
local services that support the social and emotional
development of Minnesota’s youngest children, with a
special emphasis on the 0-3 population. The grant will advance the
implementation of the strategic action plans of the six pilot
communities. Resources from the foundation will be used for local
activities focused on the social and emotional development of young
children and their families.

The Jerome Foundation awarded 19 general program grants totaling $449,920. Directors also authorized 29 grants to individual artists in the Travel and Study Grant Program in the disciplines of music, theater and visual arts. The Playwrights' Center in Minneapolis received a two-year grant of $122,000 in support of the Jerome Fellowship Program for emerging playwrights. An additional commitment of $23,000 was authorized for the Jerome Many Voices Program, which serves emerging playwrights of color. Intermedia Arts received $10,000 in support of the creation, development and production of new works by choreographers Otto Ramstad and Olive Bieringa.

The Blandin Foundation awarded grants totaling nearly $3.5 million at its March 2007 meeting. Grand Rapids grants, amounting to nearly $1.5 million, support investments in employment, human services and education, including
$1.1 million in loans and grants to the nonprofit Minnesota
Diversified Industries. The foundation also awarded a two-year grant to the Minnesota Wood Education Project ($110,500), including sponsorship of visiting master artisans, educational initiatives and support for Goods from the Woods programs. |

The Initiative Foundation awarded 25 community grants totaling $84,500 in April 2007. Morrison County United Way in Little Falls will use $10,000 for the development of a Youth as Resources program to increase intergenerational opportunities and promote youth-driven community service projects. The Wright County Soil & Water Conservation District in Buffalo will use $20,000 for the Healthy Lakes & Rivers Partnership Program to provide grant funds and training in leadership and organizational development to eight lake associations in Wright County and assist them in developing water management plans.

Otto Bremer Foundation awarded a grant to Kaposia, a nonprofit
organization that provides employment and retirement services for
people with disabilities, to support its Latino Service Initiative.
Kaposia's most recent service initiative is designed to provide
culturally competent career planning, job development and
on-the-job support for Latino adults with disabilities. The
organization's service partners include CLUES, Ramsey County,
Community Action Council, Neighborhood House and ARC-Greater Twin
Cities.

Philanthrofund Foundation (PFund) awarded $107,000 in grants and scholarships for 2007. Grants were awarded to 18 non-profit agencies serving GLBT and allied populations, while scholarship recipients, ranging from high school to graduate students in both public and private schools, are GLBT or come from a GLBT family. They all helped advance awareness and support of GLBT issues, spurring visibility and dialogue on key issues.
