Grants Roundup

The Women's Foundation of Minnesota
awarded 13 grants totaling $163,000 through its girlsBEST (girls
Building Economic Success Together) Fund. The 13 new grantees
represent the foundation's second generation of the girlsBEST Fund
program. The first generation was established in 2002 in response to
statewide community input and research on the status and future of
Minnesota girls. This initial five-year phase ended in December
2006, distributing a total of $1,017,045 in girlsBEST Fund grants to
17 nonprofit organizations in Minnesota. This generation of the
program will build on the successes and lessons learned during the
first generation of girlsBEST, including the kinds of programs,
practices and processes that most successfully promote girls'
economic development, and knowledge of how girls grow, progress and
change over time. |

The Thrivent Financial for
Lutherans Foundation awarded a $250,000 challenge grant to the Saint
Paul Area Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The
grant, which will be matched by $250,000 in individual and
congregational gifts, supports the synod's "Crossing Bridges
Connecting in Mission" initiative and will support the establishment
of up to four house churches for Latino residents on the East Side
of Saint Paul, establish a new mission congregation in Dakota County
and initiate outreach ministries among synod congregations to both
serve those who live in poverty in Ramsey County and to invite those
served into ELCA congregations. |

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of
Minnesota Foundation's Healthy Together: Creating Community with New
Americans program awarded 17 grants totaling $381,000 to promote
good health among Minnesota's growing immigrant populations — and
the communities they settle in — by building understanding and
appreciation for each other's cultures. Under Healthy Together,
which launched in 2005, the foundation makes grants to projects that
foster exchanges and interactions between immigrants and the broader
community, promote the mental health and social adjustment of new
Americans, and support the growth and development of immigrant-led,
mutual assistance organizations.
