Minnesota has fallen from its usual spot atop the America’s Health Rankings, produced by the United Health Foundation. The Gopher State is ranked second in the 2007 edition behind Vermont; Minnesota has been first for the last four years and for 11 of the 18 reports. In the past year, Minnesota's rate of uninsured population increased and the percentage of children in poverty increased, while the prevalence of obesity increased from 10.2 percent in 1990 to 24.7 percent in 2007.

Delta Dental of Minnesota has teamed up with Duluth Public
Schools to expand its national prevental dental program, Smiles
Across Minnesota, which provides low-income and uninsured children ages 3 to 12
with
preventive dental services including cleanings, fluoride treatments,
sealants and oral health prevention activities. Tooth decay (dental cavities or caries) is one
of the most common chronic diseases in childhood. More than half of
all children have cavities by the second grade and 80 percent of all
teens have cavities by the time they finish high school. |

The Medica Foundation awarded $250,000 for eight projects that address behavioral health issues in it first cycle of funding for 2007. An additional $150,000 in funding was granted for five projects that address chronic disease management. Addressing behavioral health and chronic diseases conditions are important to the Medica Foundation because of their devastating impact and the role they play in a person's overall health. Achieve!Minneapolis received $50,000 for its Minneapolis Expanded School Mental Health Program, which provides on-site mental health services for students and families, including crisis intervention, screening, assessment, treatment, consultation and training of school staff, and access to county-funded support and treatment services. Amherst H. Wilder Foundation received $30,000 for its Chronic Disease Self-Management for Low-Income Seniors program to offer and expand the availability of the program to 120 low-income and culturally diverse seniors in the east metropolitan area.

United Health Foundation is
partnering with Aging with Dignity, the U.S. Administration on
Aging, the American Hospital Association and other national and
local organizations to launch the 500,000 Wishes campaign to help
make end-of-life decision-making accessible for all individuals
regardless of culture, ethnicity or income. Five Wishes is an
Advance Directive, or living will, that helps people make important
end-of-life-care decisions that address their medical, personal,
emotional and spiritual needs before a health crisis. |
