Jerome Foundation Supports Emerging Artists

The Jerome Foundation authorized 15 general grants and commitments totaling $481,000 to support emerging artists in Minneapolis and New York City.

Franklin Art Works, a multidisciplinary center in Minneapolis, received $20,000 in support of emerging artists in the 2005-06 exhibition season. Thirteen exhibitions are planned, of which 10 will feature emerging artists from Minnesota and New York City. Large-scale, one-person exhibitions are mounted in the Main Gallery, with smaller bodies of work and installation pieces in the Project Space; a video gallery also showcases new work.

The Loft, Minneapolis, received a two-year grant of $100,000 in support of the Minnesota Writers Career Initiative. The program serves writers through a two-step process of logistical and strategic planning with a consultant and/or program staff, resulting in the creation of a workable career plan and the implementation of that plan.

Other notable grants to Minnesota organizations:

  • Graywolf Press, St. Paul, received a two-year grant of $50,000 to support publication of seven books by emerging authors. Graywolf is dedicated to the creation and promotion of thoughtful and imaginative contemporary literature essential to a vital and diverse culture, publishing a mixture of poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction.
  • The Duluth Art Institute received $15,000 to support exhibitions featuring artists who live and work in the Duluth metropolitan area. The Institute mounts juried shows such as the Members' Show, the Arrowhead Biennial and the annual summer exhibition, supporting in particular emerging artists in solo and small group formats.
  • Minneapolis' Textile Center received $16,000 to support an exhibition series, workshops offered by master visiting artists, access to the facility's dye lab, and related programs and services.

The foundation also announced seven New York City Media Arts Program grants totaling $100,000. For a complete list of grants, visit the Jerome Foundation Web site.
