McKnight Helps Create Supportive Environment for Minnesota Artists

The McKnight Foundation awarded grants totaling $2.8 million to 10 arts organizations to help create an environment that supports the success of Minnesota's artists during its first-quarter grantmaking.

Ragamala Music and Dance Theater, a dance company and school based in traditional south Indian Bharatanatyam dance, received a three-year grant of $90,000. The Children's Theater Company and School received $300,000 over three years to support its programming for children and youth. Minnesota Dance Theater and School received $90,000 over three years for ballet performances and training.

The Guthrie Theater, which will begin its season in a new building in the summer, received $300,000 for three years' worth of theatrical offerings. The MacPhail Center for Music received $1 million for a new building.

Other grants to organizations supporting the arts:
  • Park Square Theatre, $110,000
  • Artspace Projects, Inc., $120,000
  • Minnesota Opera Company, $400,000
  • Northern Community Radio, $140,000
  • Twin Cities Public Television, Inc., $300,000

"These performing arts organizations — from locally grown to internationally renowned — represent a vital cross section of the region's complex and thriving professional arts community," said Erika L. Binger, McKnight's board chair. "The variety of performances presented on these stages mirrors the numerous opportunities Minnesotans have to experience artistic passion in all its forms."

McKnight also awarded grants to children and families, the environment, research, and region and communities. In all, the 35 grants totaled more than $9 million. For a complete list of grants awarded, visit the McKnight Foundation website.
