Northland Foundation Strengthens Families and Communities

The Northland Foundation awarded 47 grants to invest in programs that strengthen families by increasing access to community resources and addressing affordable housing and homeless issues.

The board of trustees awarded Life House, Inc., of Duluth a $15,000 grant for the Futures Program, which assists at-risk youth in completing their education, gaining employment, setting career goals and learning life skills. The Koochiching Family Collaborative received $10,000 to increase access to mental health counseling services for children and families in Northome and surrounding areas. Duluth Parks & Recreation received $25,000 to provide after-school and summer programming for children and youth through six neighborhood centers.

Other notable grants:

  • ANGELS, a Living at Home/Block Nurse program, received $20,000 to assist older adults and people with disabilities to remain independent in their own homes

  • Neighborhood Housing Services of Duluth, Inc. received $20,000 to support exterior home improvements for low-income families in four Duluth neighborhoods

  • The United Way of Northeastern Minnesota received $10,000 to provide outreach education and prevention strategies focused on methamphetamine use

  • WDSE-TV PBS Eight received $12,000 to offer an early childhood literacy program through area schools

  • Aitkin KIDS PLUS received $20,000 to offer out-of-school activities for children in grades 7-12
