Roslyn McCallister Brock, the youngest and first female vice
chairman of the NAACP National Board of Directors, will discuss the
legacy of Dr. King's dream for the next generation of Americans at
the 17th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Breakfast, which
will be held Jan. 15 at 7:30
a.m. at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The
program will be broadcast live on Twin Cities Public Television. The
Twin Cities tradition, which kicks off a day of metro-wide holiday
celebrations, is hosted by the United Negro College Fund and the
General Mills Foundation. The event honors Dr. King's heritage and
influence on the civil rights movement, which not only transformed
American laws and life, but also inspired worldwide human rights
reforms. |

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and the Blue Cross and Blue
Shield of Minnesota Foundation have named Winona LaDuke the first
recipient of the Upstream Health Leadership Award for her leadership
in health as founder of the White Earth Land Recovery Project. The
award recognizes and furthers the work of an individual and
community that increase awareness of the impact of social, economic
and environmental influences on health. |

The
International Association of Fairs and Expositions honored the CHS
Miracle of Birth Center with the Award of Excellence for Special
Agricultural Education Exhibit. The most popular free exhibit at the
2006 Minnesota State Fair, the center attracted over
840,000 visitors during the fair's 12-day run, and was the
birthplace of a combined 203 piglets, lambs and calves. |

The Southwest Initiative Foundation has established a pilot
partnership program with several banks in the region to further a
mutual goal of helping business owners access financing to start or
expand their businesses. Through the bank partnership pilot program,
banks commit to informing small business owners and aspiring
entrepreneurs about SWIF’s Micro Enterprise Loan Program and
assisting them with the application process. The partnering banks
receive the benefit of their loan customers receiving quality,
ongoing technical assistance from the SWIF for the length of the
loan. |

Delta Dental of Minnesota and Children's
Dental Services created the Smiles Across Minnesota coalition in
conjunction with Oral Health America's Smiles Across America
program. The coalition will increase public awareness, providing
information and advice about expanding care and preventing tooth
decay. |

The people of the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota will
soon have their own tribal grocery store, complete with fresh
fruits, vegetables, meats and baked goods, due in part to an
economic development package from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux
Community. The SMSC awarded a $3 million loan and a $1 million grant
to the Rosebud Sioux Tribe for fiscal year 2007 for two economic
development projects. The grant and $2.4 million of the loan will
help fund construction of a tribally owned, full-service,
independent grocery store in the town of Mission. The remaining
$600,000 loan balance will be for a wireless broadband project. |

TwinsFest 2007 will take place Jan.
26-28 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. More than 50 current, former
and future Twins players will be on hand for the event, which is an
annual fundraiser for the Twins Community Fund. TwinsFest has
raised more than $3 million for community and nonprofit programs
since its inception in 1989. |
