The St. Francis Foundation announced its Healthy Communities grant program priorities for 2007. The funding areas: behavioral health; healthcare access; enhancing multi-cultural respect; heart healthy living; childhood obesity; and health insurance access. The areas support the strategic direction of St. Francis Regional Medical Center. The grant program serves children and families of Scott, Carver and western Dakota counties. Community programs that demonstrate, strengthen and support these areas will receive priority funding consideration in 2007. The St. Francis Foundation Board of Directors approved $40,000 in total funding. Grant proposals are accepted on an ongoing basis and reviewed quarterly. William S. Marvin and the late Margaret W. Marvin have endowed a scholarship program designed to provide college tuition for many of the college-bound graduates of Warroad High School. The William S. and Margaret W. Marvin Warroad Scholarship Program of the Minnesota Community Foundation was established by Mr. Marvin with a $15 million contribution. The fund is designed to help pay the college expenses for Warroad High School graduates for generations to come. Beginning with 2007 graduates from Warroad High School, those awarded scholarships may receive up to a maximum of $10,300 to cover first year educational expenses at a two- or four-year college or university. Scholarships may be renewed until undergraduate graduation or up to a maximum of four years. Applications are available at mncommunityfoundation.org/scholarships.
A nationwide network of Christian foundations reached two more milestones during the first quarter of 2007. The Kingdom Oil Christian Foundation (KOCF) and 28 other local affiliates of The National Christian Foundation (NCF) reached the $2 billion mark in contributions since NCF’s 1982 inception. KOCF, NCF and the other foundations also reached an asset balance milestone of more than $1 billion.
  Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty unveiled plans for the state's 150th anniversary celebration in 2008, including a matching grants program and fundraising effort to support sesquicentennial events and projects at the state and local levels. The governor submitted a $2 million budget to the legislature for sesquicentennial initiatives, including at least $750,000 for a matching grants program to help local communities with improvement projects and celebrations. Businesses and foundations can help match those funds by sponsoring and underwriting efforts in innovation, education, arts and culture, and health and wellness. The Saint Paul Foundation recognized St. Paul Central High School teacher Jan Mandell with the 2007 Facing Race Ambassador Award. Mandell founded the school's Central Touring Theater, which has attracted a multiracial, multi-economic and multi-intellectual group of students to produce theater that promotes discussion and truth for 30 years. The Facing Race initiative has generated discussions among people of all backgrounds to provide a greater understanding of race issues and what the community, as a whole, can do to make it a more open and equitable society.
The Northland Foundation honored the Valspar Corporation with a Valued Partner Award in appreciation of a decade of partnership on the Minnesota Beautiful Program, which distributes paint and coating projects for community restoration and beautification. Valspar has donated more than 4,000 gallons of its products to communities and nonprofit organizations in the seven-county Arrowhead Region alone.
  The Greater Twin Cities United Way recognized its "Best Of" winners, corporate partners who helped raise millions of dollars for the local community, at an awards ceremony last week. Target was honored as the best overall campaign for a large company and the best campaign leader. General Mills was recognized for outstanding achievement in fundraising for their program that raised $6.85 million. Bonnie Bassett of Land O'Lakes won one of the lifetime achievement awards.
