Minnesota Grantmaker News and Notes

June 2007

2006 marked the first time seven Community Funds of Minnesota Community Foundation each brought in more than $100,000, either for the unrestricted endowment or the family of funds program. The Community Funds program experienced significant growth in 2006, going from $1,269,247 in total contributions in 2005 to $3,191,575 at the end of 2006. The key to success is cultivating long-term relationships with donors, says Jennifer Hoffman, gift planner and community funds specialist serving northern Minnesota. “As these foundations mature it's inspiring to see how they continue to make a bigger impact on the community year after year," says Hoffman. "The success is contagious."
SUPERVALU initiated a new "Chip-In" initiative to help child welfare and adoption organizations place needy children in nurturing, loving homes. The first fundraising effort raised more than $19,000 in personal contributions from SUPERVALU associates and will be distributed, along with funds from the SUPERVALU and Albertsons foundations, to six adoption agencies in the United States and India. In all, SUPERVALU is donating $66,000 to benefit adoption programs and services.
Wells Fargo & Company awarded $454,000 to six environmental organizations to promote environmental education, research and sustainable development:
  • American Farmland Trust to support smart growth initiatives in critical agricultural and habitat areas.
  • Bonneville Environmental Foundation to its "Solar 4 Schools" program, which combines solar-electric demonstration projects on K-12 schools with renewable energy curriculum materials and advanced data monitoring.
  • Build It Green to provide education and training to support energy efficient, green home construction and remodeling.
  • Earthwatch Institute to support environmental education and scientific research.
  • Go Green Initiative to support environmental education and improved environmental management in schools.
  • University of California San Diego to support its Environmental and Sustainability Initiative and a multi-stakeholder conference related to bio-energy.
Four key government bodies have now endorsed the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation’s plan to attract and retain young adults in the Duluth Superior area. The Duluth City Council this week joined the Superior City Council, the Douglas County Board of Superiors and the St. Louis County Board of Commissioners by adopting a resolution in support of the foundation’s plan. “The project to attract and keep young adults has real momentum, and many organizations and groups are getting involved,” said Holly C. Sampson, foundation president. Building on a variety of research projects, a community foundation task force worked for a year to develop a series of recommendations that will help transform the climate for young adults in the Twin Ports. The recommendations are short-term, long-term and ongoing, and will engage individual and organizational partners.
Nash Finch Company's NFC Foundation will donate 1,500 books as part of the first Lift Up America event at the Minnesota Twins' game against Atlanta on June 12. In addition, Nash Finch is providing 1,500 cans of Our Family chicken noodle soup and 1,500 boxes of Our Family fruit snacks. Lift Up America is a collaboration of companies working with professional and college sports teams and local nonprofit agencies to provide the gifts of food, hearing and comfort.

The 19 new Bush Leadership Fellows will use their grants to learn how to improve their communities in diverse ways — working with youth and immigrants, improving wildlife management on Indian reservations, and using folklore and musicology to strengthen relationships between colleges and communities of color are only some of them. The fellowships support full-time study in academic or self-designed educational programs. The program’s goal is to help individuals at mid-career prepare for greater leadership responsibilities and make greater contributions to their communities.
