Greater Twin Cities United Way teamed up with National
Night Out in Hennepin and Ramsey counties, CommonBond Communities
and Target, asking neighborhood residents to bring food and personal hygiene items to
the festivities. This was the first year for United Way food drive
effort under the Caring Connection volunteer program. Prizes were
awarded for neighborhoods donating the most food. |

The Minneapolis Foundation established the Digital
Inclusion Fund, negotiated by community advocates as part of the
city's agreement with US Internet to promote technology literacy and
access among residents to help close the digital divide. US Internet
gave an initial amount $500,000 to create the fund, which will
promote affordable internet access, low-cost hardware, local content
and training. In addition, US Internet will direct a minimum of five
percent of network's net profits to the fund for ongoing efforts; up to $11 million will go into the fund over the
10-year term of the contract. |

Four Minnesotans received Volunteer Leave awards from Wells Fargo,
which allow them to volunteer for projects at Minnesota nonprofit
organizations while earning their regular pay and benefits.
Volunteer leaves, which range from 11 weeks to four months: John
Helgeland, North Way Community Trust; Stephanie Nafzger, Big
Brothers and Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities; Adeltoun Sokeye,
Rescue Now Services; and Faith Zimmerman, Greater Twin Cities United
Way. Wells Fargo has offered the Volunteer Leave award for more than
26 years. |

The fifth annual Women on Stage event netted $122,500 for the
Women's Fund at the Central Minnesota Community Foundation. With an
"At the Ranch" theme, the event drew a crowd of more than 850
people, with proceeds split between the Women Build project for
Habitat for Humanity, Hands Across the World, United Arts/GREAT
Theater and the Women's Fund endowment. |
