Minnesota Grantmaker News and Notes

October 2007

The Women's Foundation of Minnesota created girlsBEST (girls Building Economic Success Together) in 2002 in response to community input and research that showed many Minnesota girls face gender-specific barriers that discourage the vision and skill-building for a secure economic future, such as poverty, low wages, lack of job opportunities and training, and more. The five-year grants program focused on preparing girls for an economically secure future. There is strong evidence that the girlsBEST programs were successful in achieving both anticipated and unanticipated outcomes, and in providing important knowledge to the youth development field about programming for girls. To date, the foundation has awarded more than $1 million to girlsBEST programs.
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation awarded $4 million for comprehensive community revitalization efforts in ten U.S. cities, including Duluth. Funding to the Local Initiatives Support Corporation's (LISC) Sustainable Communities Program will help advance community development efforts based on the principles of Chicago's New Communities Program. Funds will be used to support strategic and neighborhood planning; training and technical assistance; organizational development of lead neighborhood organizations; new program development and expansion of existing programs; creation of interactive learning opportunities; electronic and print communications; and evaluation.
The Central Minnesota Community Foundation presented four awards to recognize passion and vision for philanthropy in central Minnesota:
  • Norman Skalicky, Individual Award in Philanthropy for his generous response to the needs of the community and encouraging others with challenge funds
  • Wayne Schluchter, Professional Award in Philanthropy for encouraging philanthropy with his clients and advocating the use of his foundation as a critical planning tool
  • St. Cloud Wireless Holdings/Sprint, Business Award for its corporate philanthropy and for encouraging its employees to give
  • Ed Henry, President's Award for long-term support to the foundation
The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation honored three nonprofit organizations who “Celebrate Creativity Within” at its 13th annual Touchstone Awards ceremony. The awards recognize and celebrate organizations and programs that provide leadership in transforming problems into opportunities and service into action.
  • Lake Superior Writers, Gold Award winner for the Great Northern Festival of Words, which attracted over 1,500 regional writers, publishers, filmmakers and those interested in literature, journalism, film and poetry
  • Lake Superior Youth Chorus, Silver Award winner for its Opera Collaboration
  • The Scott D. Anderson Leadership Forum, Bronze Award winner
The Northwest Minnesota Women's Fund announced the recipients of the regional Outstanding Community Builder awards: Carol Anne Johnson of Bemidji, Ginny Kruger of Warren, and Jenny Amon of Crookston. The women were nominated because of the impact of their lives and significant differences they have made in improving their communities as volunteers, mentors, in their chosen professions, and raising or supporting families.
