and Notes
March 2008

AgStar Fund for Rural America was
recognized for its community service efforts with the Farm Credit
Council's Phelps-Martin Award. AgStar played a vital
role in assisting southeastern Minnesota businesses affected by the
devastating floods in 2007. AgStar, in partnership with the Southern
Minnesota Initiative Foundation and other key donors,
established the Business Recovery Program. Grants were awarded to
help get local businesses back in operation and support the
long-term economic viability of the communities impacted. |

The Lutheran Community Foundation's
Field of Interest Fund dedicated to disaster response distributed
its first grant to Lutheran Social Services of the South, which provides disaster
response support to individuals and families through local
congregations in Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. When
more than 64,000 homes had power knocked out following a
pre-Christmas ice storm in Oklahoma, this grant helped two Lutheran
congregations purchase chain saws for tree removal. Additional
dollars helped the congregations create a common area for food
storage, along with the purchase of replacement food staples. |

The I.A. O'Shaughnessy Foundation awarded $100,000 to the Lasallian Volunteers. This second grant follows the original award
of a multi-year $300,000 challenge grant made in 2004 and
successfully matched ahead of schedule. The Lasallian Volunteers provide at least one years
of service to schools and agencies of the De La Salle Christian
Brothers. |

The Northwest Minnesota Women's Foundation kicked off Women's
History Month by inducting Winona LaDuke and Roxanne Struthers, both
of Ponsford, into its hall of fame. This year's theme was “Through a
Woman’s Eyes: Women’s Vision of the Environment.” Environmental
music and presentations were woven into the day to remind attendees
that concern for the environment has a powerful history. |
