Alice M. O'Brien Foundation

 
The Alice M. O'Brien Foundation Updates Grantmaking Guidelines
(Press Release) In honoring the Alice M. O’Brien and the William O’Brien family, the mission of the Alice M. O’Brien Foundation is to support both individual and common family interests, with focus on conservation/preservation, education and health, particularly chemical dependency, lung disease and auto immune diseases such as diabetes.

June 1, 2009:
The CHS Foundation has awarded 50 $1,000 in scholarships to two-year college students studying agriculture. The CHS Foundation is the major giving entity of CHS Inc., an energy, grains and foods Fortune 200 company.

“This year’s scholarship recipients include 50 bright, promising agriculture students from some of America’s top two-year schools,” says William J. Nelson, CHS Foundation president. “The CHS Foundation is proud to help educate these next-generation leaders in agribusiness and production agriculture.”

June 15, 2009:

CHS Pergola was recently dedicated in Mankato’s Sibley Park.

More than 250 Boston Scientific Corporation employees and family members from the Minneapolis area volunteered at five local community sites on Saturday, June 20 in celebration of the company’s 30th anniversary. The employees painted, cleaned, restored and revitalized buildings at Sacred Heart Catholic Charities, Eastside Neighborhood Services, Eden Park and Lilydale Park. In addition, volunteers painted two 4x8 murals at the Sabathani Community Center around the themes of community and diversity.

June 1, 2009:
The Bush Foundation awarded Bush Medical Fellowships for 2009 to 13 physicians who seek to have a greater impact on the health of the communities they serve.

Since the Bush Medical Fellows Program began in 1979, it has chosen more than 300 fellows from Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota to sharpen their skills, change their career directions and improve the health of their communities.

Bush Foundation Awards $1 Million in Fellowships, Grants to Artists
(Press Release) The Bush Foundation in St. Paul, Minnesota, has announced the 2009 recipients of its Enduring Vision Awards and fifteen fellowships through the Bush Artist Program.


The Jerome Foundation announces 2009 Travel and Study Grant Program. The General Mills Foundation, the Art and Martha Kaemmer Fund of HRK Foundation and the Jerome Foundation announce the 2009 Travel and Study Grant Program recipients. Thirty-three grants totaling $127,827, ranging in size from $1,275 to $5,000, were authorized. The Travel and Study Grant Program awards grants to emerging artists in Minnesota and the five boroughs of New York City, and arts administrators in Minnesota.
The Headwaters Foundation announced its 2009 Social Change Fund Grantees. The Foundation is distributing $215,000 to 24 Minnesota-based not-for-profit organizations. In keeping with Headwaters’ mission to support grassroots organizations and promote social, racial, economic and environmental justice, grants are given to organizations that address issues at the core rather than trying to fix the symptoms of injustice.
Ten Organizations Given Grants by Nonprofit Group
(St. Cloud Times) The Initiative Foundation of Little Falls has given out 10 grants for a total of $31,000 to some Central Minnesota communities. The St. Cloud Area Somali Salvation Organization received a $2,000 grant for hosting five early childhood mental health focus group meetings with Somali parents.

Knight Foundation Announces $15M Initiative to Spur Reporting
(Miami-Dade Herald) A $15 million initiative to spur new financial models for investigative reporting was announced by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Saturday during a gathering for reporters and educators in Baltimore.

Knight Foundation Announces Winners: News Experiments to Help Transform Community Life
(Knight Foundation Press Release) Nine projects that use crowdsourcing, mobile technology and digital investigative journalism to bring news and information to communities in new ways have been named winners of the 2009 Knight News Challenge.

International Media Dialogue On Covering Immigration Receives Support From The John S. And James L. Knight Foundation
(French-American Foundation Press Release) The French-American Foundation, with support from the Ford Foundation and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is organizing two international media symposia to improve the quality and depth of reporting on immigration issues. Participants will include immigration reporters and media executives from European, Canadian, and U.S. news outlets. The events are scheduled for November 13-15, 2009 at Euro RSCG in Paris and early 2010 in the U.S. They will each convene around 70 attendees.


Third Annual “Nancy” Awards Recognize Extraordinary Leadership In Improving The Well-Being Of Young Children
(MCF Press Release) Honoring the legacy of Nancy Latimer, lifelong advocate for children and families, the Minnesota Early Childhood Funders Network, a network of the Minnesota Council on Foundations, today announced that its Third Annual “Nancy” Award recipients are Dr. Glenace Edwall and Zoe Nicholie.

Eighteen North Suburban High School Graduates Named 2009 Medtronic Scholars
(Medtronic Press Release) The Medtronic Foundation today announced that 18 students have been selected as 2009 Medtronic Scholars. Each will receive a four-year scholarship for $16,000, as well as support services to assist them in their collegiate studies. Comprised of students from nine Twin Cities’ north suburban high schools, the class of 2009 Medtronic Scholars will be honored at a June 18, 2009 celebration at Medtronic World Headquarters in Fridley.

Medtronic Foundation Grants $1.4M to Teach for America
(The Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal) Teach for America will receive the grant over the next three years. A portion of the grant will focus on the organization’s national math and science initiative, to increase the number of Teach for America math and science teachers.


State Arts Board Announces Process for Stimulus Grants
Working in partnership, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Minnesota State Arts Board, and Arts Midwest are uniquely positioned to provide funds to help preserve jobs in Minnesota’s nonprofit arts sector that are threatened by declines in philanthropic and other support during the current economic downturn. The Minneapolis Foundation today announced it has distributed $500,000 through its “Crisis Assistance Fund,” which was established this year to provide immediate food, energy and housing assistance for Twin Cities residents most affected by the current economic downturn.

At its April 2009 board meeting, the board of directors of The Saint Paul Foundation approved 39 grants totaling $1,400,700.

The Saint Paul Foundation is the community foundation for Saint Paul and surrounding areas. It connects and supports donors, nonprofits and partners to enrich lives and communities through philanthropy. Since 1940, The Saint Paul Foundation has granted more than $500 million to nonprofit organizations contributing to the health and vitality of the community.

Twins Community Fund Approves $227,605 In Youth Baseball And Softball Grants
(Minnesota Twins Press Release) The Twins Community Fund board of directors announced today the approval of $227,605 in grants to youth baseball and softball organizations throughout the Upper Midwest.

Carleton College Receives a $10,000 grant from the Xcel Energy Foundation
(KYMN Radio) The grant will help fund the school’s Cowling Arboretum project: Natural science in Natural lands. Specifically, the grant will help provide training for arboretum staff on state-of-the-art restoration methods and increase opportunities for students and Northfielders to participate in restoration activities.

Xcel Energy Foundation supports St. Catherine University EcoSTARS program
(St. Catherine University Press Release) Led by St. Catherine University Education faculty Linda Distad and Lori Maxfield, EcoSTARS is a unique environmental education collaboration between St. Kate's and local elementary schools in the Prior Lake-Savage, St. Paul, and Minneapolis school districts.
