Saint Paul Foundation Launches "Facing Race" Initiative

The Saint Paul Foundation launched a multi-year initiative called "Facing Race: We're All In This Together" aimed at addressing racism by positively changing the nature of personal, organizational and institutional relationships. Other funders for the Facing Race project are F.R. Bigelow Foundation, Mardag Foundation, Katherine B. Andersen Fund of The Saint Paul Foundation and Otto Bremer Foundation.

Focused on Dakota, Ramsey and Washington counties, the vision of Facing Race is to create a more equitable, just and open region in which everyone feels safe, valued and respected. The initiative is organized into phases because the foundation believes it will take time to address the deep-rooted problem of racism.

In the first phase, the emphasis will be on individual action and change. Individuals are invited to get involved by hosting "New Conversations About Race and Racism." The New Conversations DVD/VHS is designed for use by neighbors, friends, family members, co-workers, members of faith communities and civic and recreational clubs, specifically for people who may not have thought a lot about race and racism. During the course of New Conversations, participants watch scenarios and complete activities designed to help them explore and understand their perspectives and behaviors on the issue of race and racism.

New Conversations is available free of charge to individuals and organizations who live or work in the East Metro area and are interested in hosting a conversation. For ordering information, visit facingrace.org.

The initiative will expand in the second phase to include organizations and institutions. During the third phase, the foundation will reassess community attitudes and experiences about racism.

Facing Race was created after an assessment of how St. Paul and surrounding communities were doing in terms of identifying and dealing with racism. More than 1,000 community members participated in the survey through focus groups and individual interviews. The research demonstrated that racism is not a thing of the past but also showed that many community members are eager to address the issue of racism.
