St. Paul Travelers Focuses on Low-Income Communities
St.
Paul Travelers and its two private foundations donated more than $1.8
million in the third quarter of 2005 in the Twin Cities and in Hartford,
Conn., including numerous organizations working to develop communities.
The foundation approved a
$25,000 grant to the African Development Center for operating support to
help African immigrants understand the legal systems for business and home
ownership. The Ain Dah Yung (Our Home) Center was awarded $25,000 for
educational support and job placement opportunities for homeless American
Indian youth. The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library received $20,000
for the Homework Center program, which empowers at-risk, low-income students
to take responsibility for their academic achievement.
"All too often, low-income
communities are without the social, economic and educational opportunities
afforded to others," said Mary Pickard, president of St. Paul Travelers
Foundation. "From after-school programs for youth to business development
resources for immigrants, the nonprofit organizations we support have
dedicated themselves to opening doors to opportunity and a better way of
life."
