Timberwolves FastBreak Foundation Celebrates Black History Month

The Timberwolves FastBreak Foundation is celebrating its first comprehensive Black History Month with several events scheduled throughout February.

The team's "Tell Us Who Inspires You!" creative contest asked all Minnesota middle and high school students to pick one inspirational black leader throughout American history and explain, through an essay, poem or artistic expression, how that leader has inspired him or her to become a leader. The winner in each category will receive a trip for two to Atlanta in April to tour the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center and then watch the Timberwolves play the Atlanta Hawks.

The Cookie Cart in Minneapolis will receive the team's $10,000 monthly grant in support of their efforts honoring Black History Month. Cookie Cart has developed a Timberwolves Black History Month cookie that will be added to each order throughout the month. The iced cookie displays the month's message, "Who Inspires You?"

In addition, the foundation will convene a panel of prominent civic leaders to discuss the Mixed Blood Theatre productions of "Jackie Robinson" and "Black Eagle" with over 900 middle and high school students.

On Feb. 9, the foundation hosted a Read To Achieve event for 50 elementary students from the Minneapolis Downtown Interdistrict School. Four new Wolves players read to the students and then decorated the special Black History Month cookies.
