St. Paul Travelers Focuses on Revitalizing Communities in Latest Round of Grants

St. Paul Travelers and its two private foundations supported community organizations based in the Twin Cities, Hartford, Conn., and nationwide in second-quarter grants.

"Revitalizing communities is about more than bricks and mortar," said Mary Pickard, president of St. Paul Travelers Foundation. "It's also about working together with the many skilled, dedicated and impassioned neighborhood leaders who want to create a better place to live and work. Our goal is to support these leaders and help them be successful in making positive change in their communities."

In the second quarter of 2005, the foundation approved grants totaling more than $1.4 million to support affordable housing, commercial development and community building. Some of the local grants:

  • Twin Cities Local Initiatives Support Corporation received $175,000 to support and promote affordable housing and neighborhood development in Minneapolis and St. Paul

  • Community Reinvestment Fund received $75,000 to help rebuild commercial corridors in St. Paul by helping minority or immigrant-owned small businesses

  • East Side Neighborhood Development Co., Inc. received $35,000 for ongoing support to provide housing, economic and community development in the Payne Avenue-Phalen Lake neighborhood

From April through June 2005, St. Paul Travelers and its two private foundations collectively made 124 grants or charitable gifts in three focus areas:

  • 33 grants to community development organizations, totaling $1,455,000
  • 45 grants to education organizations, totaling $1,592,000
  • 46 grants to arts and culture organizations, totaling $1,057,000

A complete list of grants can be found on the St. Paul Travelers Web site.
