CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER
Amherst H. Wilder Foundation

The Amherst H. Wilder Foundation is a nonprofit health and human services organization that has served the greater Saint Paul area since 1906. Wilder operates over 70 programs that help children succeed in school, older adults remain independent, troubled youth create healthy futures, and individuals and families maintain long-term housing. Position overview:
The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) reports directly to the president as a dynamic and strategic member of the foundation's leadership team. The CAO also leads, develops, and improves the effectiveness of the administrative team, successfully partners with the program leaders in carrying out Wilder's mission, and is a key driver in organizational development. The CAO develops and implements goals, strategies, and policies that result in effective and responsible management of the business and administrative functions of the foundation.

The administrative services division is comprised of six functions: human resources, finance, investment, compliance, information services and real estate. The chief administrative officer's crucial program partners include the division directors of children & family services, housing, leadership development, elderly, and research.


Key accountabilities:
  • Serves as a key member of the foundation's strategic leadership team
    • With the president and senior leaders, sets the strategic direction for the foundation in its corporate administrative practice
    • Actively participates in the development and implementation of the strategic plan
    • Aligns administrative practices with the strategic plan in addition to identifying new business and administrative opportunities
    • Works with specific board committees, including the chairs of human resources, investment, and audit & compliance committees, to set content and process direction for committee and board action
    • Develops, coordinates, and delivers major strategic board presentations
  • Leads, develops, and improves the effectiveness of all the human, financial, and physical resources of the foundation through a strong, high functioning administrative division
    • Designs, develops, and oversees the foundation's human resource strategies and policies to ensure effective human resource and organizational development practices
    • In partnership with program directors, ensures the strategic development of the annual and long range operating and capital budgets; provides ongoing financial analysis of actual activities and expenditures
    • Ensures an information services capability that elevates the performance of the organization
    • Leads the stewardship and growth of the foundation's asset base through strategic leadership of the investment portfolio, real estate holdings, and effective compliance programs
    • Approves and oversees contract development, implementation, and compliance
  • Successfully partners with and supports the foundation's program directors
    • Seeks and maintains effective and productive relationships with program leaders
    • Cultivates "customer service orientation" in all aspects of administrative areas
    • Identifies and connects with key individuals to develop organizational partnerships between administrative and operating programs
    • Develops a positive, supportive organizational climate
  • Develops professional relationships with peers in other organizations — as well as civic leaders — in order to promote community awareness of the foundation and its programs and services
  • Represents the foundation and interprets the foundation's mission to community leaders, government officials, corporations, and agencies
  • Develops contacts and establishes professional relationships with community leaders, business leaders, and agency representatives
  • Serves on community task forces, boards, and committees

Qualifications:
  • At least 15 years of overall experience with progressive leadership responsibility
  • Advanced degree in business or public administration or equivalent experience
  • Past experience in a foundation, social service agency, private sector or public sector
  • Can work strategically through broader systems approaches, develop and support a high functioning team, successfully partner with other foundation leaders and raise the level of organizational development and effectiveness
  • Track record of building strong mutually beneficial relationships and achieving results through empowering people
  • Interpersonally astute and an excellent listener who values results, hard work, customer service, teamwork and loyalty to the foundation's mission
  • An effective communicator with a demonstrated ability to work with all people

Compensation:
The salary for this position is commensurate with experience and competitive with similar nonprofits. A full benefits package includes: health and dental insurance, 401(k) and 403(b) retirement plans, a pension plan, life insurance, short and long-term disability, paid time off and an employee assistance program.
